ESTII^TION OF POPULATION

Possible methods for calculating the population in intercensal years include: 1) the natural increase, which takes into account the births, deaths, inmipration and emifration occurring each year, and for which information with regard to migration within this state is not available; 2) the returns of school attendance which are not available; 3) the logistic curv^e of Pearl ajid Reed, which is more applicable to large population groups; 4) arithmetic progression, which assumes that the same nwnerical increase, which occurred between the last two census couiits, will continue; and 5) geometric pro- gression, which assumes that the same rate of increase which occurred during the last intercensal period will continue.

A comparison of the results of estimates, inade by the arithmetic and geometric methods, with the figures for the 1930 census, indicated that the method of arithi-netic progression was more generally satisfactory for the population groups within the State of Maryland.

The method used was as follows:

Given the population of Maryland on January 1, 1920 and April 1, 1930, to find the population on July 1, 1S31

1,631,526 - 1,449,661 . 1476.5772 (Monthly increase) 123 (months)

1,631,526 + (1478.5772 x 15 mos. ) s 1 , 653, 705 (Pop., July 1,1931)

Annexations: Four of tlie towns in I.taryland annexed territory from adjoining areas between 1920 and 1930, necessitating special calculations up to and after the time of annexation. Only approximate figures v/ere avail- able for the number of individuals in each of the areas annexed, as follows:

3/28/34 - Maryland State Department of Health for State Planning Commission

Estimation of population

Population of annexed areas:

Town Cumberland - Allegany Co. Cambridge - Dorchester Co.

Frederick - Frederick Co. Salisbury - Wicomico Co. The population in each of these tov/ns 'was calculated for 1930 as if there had teen no annexation. Let

The equation states that the census population in 1930 is equal to the popula- tion in 1930, if no ajonexation had occurred, plus the population of the annexed area, plus the increase in the anriexed area between the time of annexation and the census of 1930. Everything is known except "y" for which the eq'iation is solved. A monthly increase can then be calculated for the annexed area and also for the town as if there had been no annexation. Estimated populations for the town for 1930 - 1945 were then based upon the sum of these two monthly increases. Estimation of population of Frederick City for July 1, 1931:

14434 - y + 600 + 69 < 600 j'y - 11,0661 [ V [ 123(ll,066)jJ y = 13,752 (Population of 1930, if 'no annexation) 14,434 - 13,752 = 682 (Population of annexed area in 1930) 682 - 600 = 1.188406 (Monthly increase in annexed area) 5^
