HISTORY

Governor Luther Hodges, North Carolina's industry hunting executive, found a need to enlarge the potential skills of the State's citizens, thus providing a trained work force for new and expanding industries. Through his leadership, Industrial Education Centers were created by North Carolina's 1957 General Assembly. Funds for the schools and programs are provided by the State of North Carolina, the National De- fense Education Act, and the counties.

In 1960 the people of Pitt County, under the leadership of Dr. Robert L. Humber, voted a bond issue for the establishment of an Industrial Education Center. The center was chartered by the State of North Carolina in 1961, to serve the needs of Pitt County and the surrounding area. In 1964 the school was designated a technical institute by the State Board of Education.

After the completion of the new, modern building to house the school, the first classes were begun at the school on September 10, 1964.

DEDICATION

Sometimes in life there is found a man who dreams and pursues his dreams until they become realities. The qualities of leadership, dignity, worth, and humility combine in such a man to such an extent that we might justly attribute this statement to him: "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. "

For your vision of tomorrow's needs, your belief in the youth of today, and your ability to persevere until your dreams come true, we, the students of Pitt Tech- nical Institute, dedicate this, the first volume of THE TARHEEL TECHNICIAN, to Dr. Robert Lee Humber, Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
