The Dehumanization of Me by the Impersonality of a Super People Plant

It's not often one realizes the impact of our community. Going on day to day, contact is minimal, even miniscule. Many of us come in contact with fewer than fifty people in our whole time here.

There are over forty thousand — 40,000 — people studying, working, playing and living in our community.

The majority of our community comes, at- tends classes and leaves. They live with parents, friends, in couples, groups, alone. They fee! the impact of number most in the daily madness of getting to our campus. They fight insanity as they insanely fight for a space to park. To most, our community is a super people plant. Get in, proceed through an archaic maze of contradictory channels, stand in awe and listen to the rationalization of the irrational, observe the chaos of organ- ization. Plod forward, don't make waves, follow orders, get out.

To the bureaucracy we are units of flesh to be processed according to a prescribed "do not alter or mutilate" program. We are parked, housed, scheduled, catalogued, physically

fitted, sex educated, uniformly programmed, taxed to enter, taxed to stay, taxed to leave. People are unreliable, inefficient. They must be regimented and organized to allow rapid access to important details and proper educa- tion. It is a symptom of a well-hidden epidemic. As I enroll it grabs me. The longer I stay, the harder I work to learn to think, the harder it grabs as it teaches me what to learn. If I learn to think it will try to reject me. If I learn what to think I have rejected myself. I am dead. Only the number — their vision of me the person — continues to exist.

To many the realization never comes or is too painful to accept. To some, realization means a total rejection of our community and a search for another beginning. To some it is a challenge, a misguided monster to be cap- tured, tamed, humanized — returned to the reality of people first. They come to learn, to interact, to enjoy, to teach. To change and be changed through feeling, not fear. To them we humbly wish our ultimate success. Show us, teach us, help us, touch us. We are our only chance.

The dichotomous natures of personal and imper- sonal bring to you. ..the Student Union, the only building on campus that potentially belongs to students and their activities.

You can't go in the front door because of the construction, so you walk around to the side to go in. Unzip your jacket, sigh, and tottle on down- stairs to grab yourself a cup of yogurt and sit off in a corner somewhere. Lots of corners around here.

You stir your blueberries to the sounds of the Carpenters along with the droning conversations at the tables around you while breathing pizza and burger aroma — ahhh....

Hum — you say you didn't come here to eat? You're not hungry! But everyone eats Union food!

No, you didn't say anything at all to me. I smiled at you in the hall as I walked past the SGA office and the record coop, but you acted as though I didn't exist.

Why did you come here?

I thought you were a student, but you didn't recognize me. Well, no, you must be a student because this is the nebulous palace where students come together to form one whole 'studentsie' atmosphere. And you've got that atmosphere.

You may have come here to avoid studying in the library or to spend your two hour break looking for a fellow student with whom you can exchange complaints, giggles, heavies, compliments, dope.... You came here to meet someone you know or haven't met. Or maybe you want to go into the smoke shop to break your diet or kick your 'I'm quitting smoking' habit.

And there's more. ..bowling, pool, rides to West Orange, New Jersey, 6 oz. of egg salad, tickets to Ike and Tina, a union of black students, sugarless bubble gum, liberated gays, expensive textbooks, full feature movies. ..at the Student Union.

Now that I have more of an idea of why you came here, let me ask you something - what's your I.D. number?

Oh. I'm sorry, I thought you were someone else.

An old lady stares, with obvious disapproval, at all these 'long-hared, hippie radicals' as she hobbles across campus. Well lady, what the hell are you doing here, anyway? It's not supposed to be your place, but ours — we, the students. Come on, lady, look at what is being held up in front of you. God knows what your eyes might have missed. Maybe a little truth. Truth? What kind of crap is that?

It's a great multi-versity, a constantly booming place. Activity nonstop. Thousands of people. Word is out; that this place is a drag. Weil, lady, don't you believe it. Too much humour. Not everybody just goes to school here. Sometimes people get together and play games here. Dance, sing, create, play together.

Just find yourself a nice place to sit and watch the passersby pass. Have you ever noticed the funny different ways that people walk? Some bounce, some trot, some glide. Everybody walking around with some kind of joke inside of them. It's only when the people turn away from each other and keep the jokes inside that they lose themselves within.

When the weather gets nice, people seem to crawl out of the monotonous Georgian buildings like moths out of hibernation. Then this place comes alive, a renaissance after a cold, wet winter. The singing starts, and before you know it, thousands of mumbo-jumbo term papers turn into paper airplanes that sail across campus with their jokes.

The diary explodes with students, jubilant with the onslaught of spring and a sudden craving for 'the best ice cream in the world.' While they're down there, ice cream lickers eye the site of all those annual celebrations and speculate on this year's fun.

Dogs and children grow out of the air and lend to the smiles of any occasion. Lots of little kids around, fun to play with, and dogs running all over the mall fetching chewed-up sticks. We're here for an education, but we're here for fun, too.

In spite of all the cuts and criticisms, the fact remains that there are individuals here. A huge mass of them, true, but unique individuals none the less. Each with his own sense of humour and outlook on life. You cannot classify us, lady. Didn't you notice? Each of us is a different

smile.

Overhuge Georgian architecture blocl<ades tlie sun- light and we exist in cycles of shade and blackness.

Countless fading white cylinders adorn faceless build- ings, gathering up the sun and bombarding our eyes with bedazzling ugliness; and we exist in a world of incoherent brilliance relieved only by blackness.

Waste spews forth from hordes of automobiles, from utilities, from droves of careless, unthinking people. Green grass, shrubs, trees yield to a merciless assault of concrete and asphalt as the ground is gorged by monstrous creatures belching with rage and sadistic as they rape the earth, replacing its beauty with over- huge Georgian architecture.

Distrust breeds - administrators lose sight of their obligations yielding their loyalties to the forces from without - faculty seeks prestige and security sacrific- ing innovation, communication, dedication — stu- dents seek the path of least resistance; learning is incidental, graduation paramount — the curriculum is wrapped in bureaucratic tape and archaic ignorance; emphasis is on maintaining a level of mediocrity, stifling the desire and creativity of the interested to guarantee the uninterested will not slip through and cheapen the holy degree.

Apathy reigns supreme at all levels races a lonely second.

The picture is grossly incomplete and unbalanced. There are multitudinous counterexamples in every case. Tremendous potential for improvement exists. But faults are the areas of greatest concern. They undermine and will eventually destroy. All those concerned enough to be offended should be dedicat- ed enough to correct and improve — themselves — their surroundings.

We are a community established for learning, not a puppet of the bureaucrats, a factory of materialism, a seeker of glory or a national guard training ground.

Think, innovate, communicate - feed your head and share it. _/A_

This book has been published because over one thousand students felt it was important enough to support it. In order to provide you with a book it has been necessary to cut back on all non-essential expenses (color, hard cover, duotones, special effects), limit our size, charge for group photo- graphs and increase our price. This is a direct result of the fact that the members of student govern- ment didn't feel one thousand people were of significant importance. It is your money and they claim to be your representatives. If you are not satisfied, get action or remove them. We feel you are entitled to know why many of your demands were not implemented this year and why the future of a yearbook on this campus is uncertain. The next step is yours.
