Dayton Chief, Division of Dendrology and Range Forage Investigations Forest Service Bibliographical Bulletin No. 20 4 August 1952 UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Continually the question is asked, ““Where can I obtain information about this or that tree?” Anyone who attempts botanical identifications finds himself confused by the vast array of literature on the subject, and yet is frequently hard-pressed to put his finger on the titles that will satisfy the need of the moment. This list of publications was compiled as the result of got the’ numerous inquiries received for literature on tree _ identification. Such a bibliography will fill a long-felt need . of foresters and botanists. It should also be helpful to librarians, teachers, naturalists, students, and all individ- uals who are, interested. in the outdoors. ae ¥ iste : eee CONTENTS Page Page introduction 2.) 2 eee 1 «Lake States; 2:2 eee 29 References for genera and families 3 Continental United States gener- aly Awe 22a ae ee ee 6 Eastern States generally _... 10 Northeastern? Publications of the twentieth century only are listed. Publications describing shrubby species are also included because some important works on trees include shrubs, because shrub species are continually being discov- ered in an arborescent state, and because there are relatively few publications on shrubs alone. Emphasis is placed on works that are useful for identification purposes and also on those giving tree information of general interest. Technical works primarily of silvical, ecological, or economic nature are listed only when they contain a considerable amount of descriptive matter or illustra- tions. Important monographs on tree genera and families are included, but works confined to a single species are omitted. Where a work has been revised, an effort has been made to list only the latest edition or revision. | So enormous is the literature on trees and other woody plants that it is often difficult to know where to draw the line in compiling la bibliography of this sort. For example, the six following works (among others), although they contain a great store of informa- ine on United States trees, are omitted from the body of the list, BAILEY, L. H. The Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture. 3 vols., 3,639 pp., illus. Macmillan Co., N. Y. 19385. This magnificent work has gone through many printings. BEAN, WILLIAM JACKSON.
