Customers unacquainted with the different kinds of plants that bloom throughout the season, would be advantageously supplied, if, in giving orders, they state the object they wish to effect, also the sum they wish to expend, giving the names of what they already have, whena selection will be made suitable for the purpose ; and doubtless prove more satis- factory than if made by themselves, as it is no easy matter to judge of varieties by reading a description. Where selections are left to us purchasers may depend upon receiving the best sorts and the best plants. Orders by mail promptly attended to. We desire to be informed of any error or omission (should any occur), so that it may be corrected at once, as it is our desire to satisfy all who may favor us with their orders. THE KING OF THE EARLIES, OR BREEZE’S NO. 4. We have contracted with and accepted the agency from David W. Prime, of Brandon, Vt., for the propagation and distribution of this famous potato, which has set the agricultural community in a fever of excitement. The originator (Mr. Breeze) claiming that this is the earliest potato yet grown and the most productive. The following extract from an agricultural journal will give some idea as to the value placed upon it by the leading authorities. From the ‘‘ Rural American,” January 27, 1869. We were shown a new seedling potato recently in New York that had been sold for fifty dollars. A very few have been sold at the following prices: 16 potatoes brought $825.00; 12 brought $615; 1 brought $50.00. One was traded for a good cow, valued at sixty dollars. We have received our informa- tion from Mr. Bliss, the well-known seedsman of New York, and have no doubt of its being true. From the ‘‘ American Agriculturist.” Tue Porato Excrrement.—When we read the accounts of the enormous prices paid for tulip bulbs in the 17th century, we think that the stories must be exaggerated, or the people of that time must have been very foolish. The present excitement in regard to new potatoes, in a measure rivals that of the tulip, at least, we thought so when we were told that $50 each had been re- fused for a coyple of tubers that we were inspecting. The late Mr. Goodrich began his experiment with unimproved stock from South, and the Early Rose and other new sorts are derived from Mr. Goodrich’s seedlings. Whoever pro- duces a better potato than we already have, isa public benefactor, andif he gives us one that will produce more to the acre, he adds largely to the wealth of the country. It has thus far happened, that those who have done most for the im- provement of the potato, have not been pecuniarily benefited, Mr. Goodrich, it is said, made no money, and we learn that the large sums derived from the sale of the Early Rose, went to others than the originator of that variety. The success of the Early Rose has been so very general, that new seedlings will doubtless abound, and it is not unlikely that many indifferent ones will be offered at enormous prices. It will be well for those who wish to experiment with the new sorts, to purchase only of dealers of established reputation. The remarkable specimens above referred to were raised by Mr. Breeze, the origina- tor of the Early Rose. The facts above set forth will be sufficient to show that we have in this variety a potato, the value of which cannot well be estimated; and, judging from the experience in new varieties the past few years, we have no doubt an investment will prove satisfactory. Price, single plants, $2.50; two plants, $4.00; per dozen, $18.00; per hundred, $125.00. They will be carefully packed for shipping in such a way as to insure perfect safety. Orders received now will be placed on our books, and filled in the order of their receipt. No orders will be entered unless accompanied by the cash. Sent out on and after the Ist of May. p] = ae ‘ INDEX.
