The plants are very productive of large, beautiful berries. If you are not satisfied with the variety you have been growing for midseason berries try Aberdeen. AROMA. A good late variety and seems to do well in most sections of the country. Produces large crops of almost perfect shaped berries, light red with a bright green calyx. Will bring good prices whether sold locally or shipped to distant markets. BEAUTY. A new berry that is all its name implies. A big, juicy, sparkling red berry of the most delicious flavor, firm enough for distant shipment. Good grower and heavy producer. BELLMAR. Another variety the U. S. Department of Agriculture developed from a cross of Howard 17 (Premier) and Missionary made in 1922 which is just being introduced this season. As we have not yet fruited this variety we are quoting from Circular No. 171 of the U. S. Department of Agriculture dated July, 1931. ‘“‘Because of its superior characteristics it is recommended for trial in Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey, and it should be tested in comparison with Howard 17 (Premier) wherever that variety is adapted for the general market. As compared with Howard 17 (Premier) the plants are much more vigorous and produce runners more freely ; the blossoms are perfect, ripens about a week earlier than Pre- mier and fruits about as long, in Glenndale, Md., it has been more productive than Premier and has produced a better grade of berries, and on good soil the berries are as large, color bright red, similar to Premier but not as dark as Missionary, they have a very large green calyx and a gloss which has caused it to be selected as the handsomest among hundreds. They are firmer than Premier and not so acid as Missionary. They rank high in dessert quality when grown under North Carolina and Maryland conditions.’’ We advise early ordering this season. BIG JOE A favorite midseason variety. Does well ° on almost all types of soil, but of course good soil and care are necessary to get the very best results. Begins fruiting just as the early varieties begin to ‘‘run down” and being such a fancy berry they always bring top prices on any market. The plants make a very vigorous growth, is very productive of large, bright red berries that have a large green calyx, making them very attractive when offered for sale. BLAKEMORE This is the new early shipping berry developed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture and it is predicted that it will take the place of Klondyke and Missionary as an early shipping berry. It is a great plant maker and said to be one of the best keepers after being picked of them all. The berries are very attractive when packed, this coupled with their good size, good shipping qualities and their productiveness should make it one of the leading early varieties if not the leader. Another very important thing in their favor is that they can be left on the vines between pickings longer than most any other variety and still be in good shipping condition. This one thing alone means a lot when you are short of pickers or when a spell of rainy weather is on. We suggest that you do not fail to try Blakemore. This is the finest dessert berry of CHESAPEAKE. the late varieties and will keep better and sell for higher prices the season through than any other late berry we know of. The fruit is very large and hand- some and will stay so till the end of the fruiting season; berries are a rich, glossy red with bright yellow seed, very uniform in both shape and size, have the most delicious flavor, a heavy producer and will stand shipping better than most any other late berry we know of. One of the really good berries. The Tingle Nursery Co., Pittsville, Md. 17 COOPER. A very vigorous variety. Fruit is very large, bright red and of excellent quality. A beautiful berry and one of the best for the grower who has a local market for big berries. DR. BURRILL. Very similar to Senator Dunlap. Excellent for canning and very delicious for table use. EARLY JERSEY GIANT. Fruit of very high quality; ripens early. Color bright red and very large in size. Strong grower. GANDY. This is one of the old favorites and a favorite with many growers for an extra late shipping berry. Does best in low, springy land as it needs plenty of moisture during fruit- ing season. Berries are large and of fine quality, bright red with a very large green calyx. GIBSON. This is another old standard variety that has proven its worth many times over. A vigorous grower and makes a fine fruiting bed. Fine for local market, home use and are excellent for canning and preserving. A midseason variety. HAVERLAND. Many growers still prefer Haverland as a midseason variety and in some sections it is really good, but some of the newer varieties have taken its place in many sections. Blossoms are imperfect and must have a perfect flowered variety planted with it. The berries are large, light red, and the plants produce immense quantities of them but not solid enough for shipment to long distance markets. HOWARD 17 If not the same as Premier it is so near like it that one description will answer for both varieties. KLONDYKE. Early. Berries uniform in shape and size. Dark red, mild and delicious, very handsome. Plants make a good growth. Foliage light green. One of the best shippers. LUPTON. A mighty good late shipping berry, very large and attractive and will arrive on the distant markets in good shape. Their appearance causes them to bring good prices but the eating qualities are not nearly up to most other varieties. MISSIONARY. Early. A strong grower. Among the earliest to ripen; very productive; berries are well colored, firm and large. Good shipper. Especially suited to the South. PARSONS’ BEAUTY. . A description of Gibson will answer for this too. Not much difference if any in them. The very best early variety and the biggest PREMIER. money-maker of the early varieties for the past several years. Will do well in most soils but the better the soil and the better the care you give them the larger the profit they will return. Very productive, ripens early and bears through a very long season. Plant growth very strong and vigorous, making a fine fruiting bed under the most trying weather conditions and as this variety is almost frost proof there is hardly a chance of disappointment if you plant Premier. SENATOR DUNLAP. Was for a long time considered one of the best berries for a beginner and is still a good one, but some of the newer varieties are taking that place from it. Plants are good growers, produce heavy crops of bright red berries, fair in quality and of medium size. TENNESSEE PROLIFIC. Midseason. Fruit is very large, bright red and attractive. Good for nearby markets. One of the heaviest croppers we know. WM. BELT. Until Chesapeake came on the market Wm. Belt was considered the standard of excelence in quality, still as good as ever but we consider Chesapeake better. The fruit is somewhat irregular in shape but very attractive. FALL BEARING VARIETIES CHAMPION AND PROGRESSIVE. These are both the same or so near alike one description will answer for both. The Progressive was really the starting of growing the fall- bearers commercially as a real money crop. The berries are not so large as those of the Mastodon but many prefer their flavor to that of Mastodon. They are still good under whatever name you grow them or regardless of how many other varieties you are now growing. MASTODON This is, no doubt, the best of the ever- * bearers at the present time. Mastodon produces lots of great big, delicious berries that are firm, bright red and have a beautiful green cap which makes them look much more attractive when packed for market. Plant growth is very vigorous and for a grower who has a good local market or one within trucking distance we recommend Mastodon for a sure, quick money crop. They always bring good prices and many growers report profits of several hundred dollars per acre the Same season planted. If you do not want to grow the fall bearers for market you surely do for your own table use. 18 The Tingle Nursery Co., Pittsville, Md. ABODT OUR LINING=-ODT STOCK Our sales on lining-out stock were the largest last spring they have ever been, due we believe, in part to the quality of stock we send out. Several of our customers say the stock they receive from us is the best they have ever received from any nursery. We aim to send you a little better stock and a little more for your money than you have been usually getting. And, if at any time the stock we send you is not up to your expectations or what you think it should be we want to know about it as we do not want your business unless we can make you feel by the stock you receive from us that you are getting your money’s worth. We are offering many new items this season and believe you will find listed herein one of the best and most complete assortments of lining-out stock that is being offered by any grower in the east today. You will also notice that our prices in most cases have been greatly reduced. The growth of our stock the past season has been very good. Our overhead system of irrigation (about ten acres) has helped us keep the stock growing without any setbacks the entire season. You should come and see it. We know prices on specimen stock are lower than they have been (ours are too) but prices of most all things grown or manufactured are lower. From surveys that have been made we find the nursery business in good shape as compared to many other lines of business. Another bright side to the nursery business is that many of the growers who went into the growing of nursery stock as an easy way to get some big money have dropped out and to the ones who keep going along we believe it will still pay to keep up their assortment of good stock and to add some of the newer things each season. This is what we are trying to do and our volume of sales has shown an increase over the previous season for several seasons. Nearly all of this stock has been one or more times transplanted. That which has not been is designated by the letter S which signifies that it is a seedling. We hope you can come and see our stock, how we grow it and just how nice it is but if you cannot come we will be glad to show you by the quality of stock that we hope to send you. We are equipped to grow Lining-Out stock in large quantities and will be glad to talk over the growing of your stock for you. We have very good soil with necessary equipment to do it economically. We can furnish rooted cuttings of practically all stock we are offering in this list and will be glad to quote prices on receipt of your list of requirements. \ The Tingle Nursery Co.
