The 1944 Tonahian is dedicated to

Earl Kendall Carter

Who Is the only person important enough to have a reserved table at the Coffee Cup; who enjoys both Shakespeare and Agatha Christie; who reads poetry beautifully at Christmas tree parties; who is perpetually haunting miscreants who keep his library books over- time; who likes coffee, cigarettes, crossword puzzles, and the little Danes; who, for nine years, has been one of the most vital personalities on the campus.

At the beginning of the year, a need was felt for merging many of the organizations on the campus. Formerly there were four literary societies Gamma Chi and Theta Zeta Phi for women, and Protropian and J.S. Green for men. The men's societies last year disbanded for the duration. This year the women's societies and several other organizations Students' Associa- tion, Association of Women Students' Council, Y.W.C.A., and Y.M.C.A. merged into one organi- zation, the Students' Association of Piedmont College. This arrangement will last only for the duration.

RELIGION COMMITTEE

The objectives of the Religion Committee are to emphasize reverence and intensify a spirit of worship on the campus, to encourage student and faculty participation in religious activ- ities, and to promote programs that will definitely meet the spiritual needs of the individual. Reactions from students indi- cate that much progress is being made toward the attainment of these goals.

The Religion Committee is composed of several smaller committees of students and faculty members:

WHO'S WHO itMONIi STUDENTS IN A MB HI CO COLLEGESANI) UNIVERSITIES

JANE ADAMS

Jane* 8 unusual personality and fine quali- ties of leadership have made her one of the most popular students at Piedmont. Her most impor- tant contributions have been in the fields of athletics and student government. She has been vice-president of Students* Association, presi- dent of the Junior Class, a member of the Supreme Court and of the A. W. S. Council. As an outstanding basketball player during her first two years at school, and as director of the girls* physical education program, she has proved her exceptional athletic ability.

MARTHA FORT ANDERSON

During her four years at Piedmont, Martha has distinguished herself by her excellent scho- lastic record and her contribution to the musi- cal life of the school. She was awarded the Travelli Scholarship for the highest average in the Freshman Class, and has occupied a permanent place on the Dean's List. Her musical activities include membership in the Music Club, one year secretary-treasurer; participation in several piano recitals; and serving as Glee Club accom- panist. She is a member of the Torch Club- an honorary society for Piedmont women.

FREEMAN MASHBURN

Although Freeman has been at Piedmont for only one year, he has been one of our most active and capable leaders, especially in religious work. He has served as chairman of the Religion Committee, which has the tremendous responsi- bility of planning chapel and vesper programs, and has personally conducted many religious pro- grams on the campus. Until his graduation at the end of the second quarter, he was president of the Senior Class.
