The bands first "self contained" tour (The Quick & The Dead), is an amazing sweet spot in their musical history, as far as extended free-form jamming is concerned. The band sounds radically different from late 1967. The simple R & B numbers are being phased out in favor of new original material that is played en suite, facilitating lysergicaly infused/inspired jamming. Within three months, the band again sounds completely different, as they concentrate on the material that would become Live Dead. "It had taken them three years, but the elements of talent and material had welded themselves into a powerful whole. Before, Garcia's licks and Pigpen's presence had carried them, but now they were a solid ensemble that could swing..." Dennis McNally Recordings of only a half-dozen of the nine tremendous shows performed on this tour exists here (top-notch soundboards), but each one contains some extraordinary improvisations, and certainly some of the most mind-bending jamming the Grateful Dead have ever performed... 1/20/68 - Eureka Municipal Auditorium Eureka, CA Jam > Clementine > New Potato Caboose > Born Cross Eyed > Spanish Jam > Caution Jam > Dark Star Source: SB (Jools) Sound: A-/A Score: 99+ pts Comments: Dubbed a "Pot Orgy" by the local press, this extraordinary show is as jazzy as any show in 1973/74, who cares that the Dark Star fades out. Highlights: The entire show is amazing! Pig is playing extremely well! Dynamite Clementine, Potato, Spanish Jam. http://www.archive.org/details/gd68-01-20.sbd.jools.19470.sbe-fixed.shnf 1/22/68 - Eagles Auditorium Seattle, WA Alligator, Cryptical Envelopement-> The Other One-> Cryptical Envelopement-> New Potato Caboose-> Born Cross-Eyed-> Spanish Jam-> Dark Star-> China Cat Sunflower-> The Eleven-> Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks)-> Feedback Source: SB (Weiner) Sound: B+/A- Slight hiss Score: 98+ pts Comments: Sick feedback segment is on Anthem. This must have been one of the rare times Weir was able to concentrate, he plays extremely well! Highlights: Check out the Jer/Bob interplay during the cool jam towards the end of Alligator. Probably the best-ever version of Spanish Jam. Between Jerrys Flamenco licks, sinister chords from Bobby, and the Malaguena from Billy/Mickey, this one sounds like it should be the soundtrack to a Sergio Leone western! http://www.archive.org/details/gd68-01-22.sbd.weiner.8583.sbeok.shnf 1/23/68 - Crystal Ballroom Portland, OR Cryptical Envelopment > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment > Clementine > New Potato Caboose > Born Cross Eyed > Spanish Jam Source: SB (Jools) Sound: A Score: 97 pts Comments: Spanish Jam is cut. Highlights: Snappy drums! Clementine is played slower as a shuffle, sounds different every time they play it! Nice Cryptica/Other One/Cryptical. http://www.archive.org/details/gd68-01-23.sbd.jools.20347.sbeok.shnf 1/27/68 - Eagles Auditorium Seattle, WA Spanish Jam Source: SB (Hollister) Sound: A- Score: 95+ pts Highlights: This 12 minute Spanish Jam, which has Phil high in the mix, sounds like a gunfight on Acid! http://www.archive.org/details/gd68-01-27.sbd.jools.14736.sbeok.shnf 2/2/68 - Crystal Ballroom Portland, OR Viola Lee Blues > Feedback ; Cryptical Envelopment > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment > Clementine > Good Morning Little School Girl* Source: SB (Jools) Sound: A- Score: 98 pts Comments: Clementine is on So Many Roads Boxed set. Thanks Cliff. I am woefully unschooled on 1968, and this gives me a some studying to do.

"Over your head" Cliff, I'm hurt. Just because you have labled me a late 70's - Early 80's junkie doesn't mean that you can so casually discount my ability to appreciate the early Dead in all their raw splendour. In fact, I had earlier grabbed the Eagle show this AM and spent a wonderful commute with this tip-top performance. Over my head indeed. Cliff, you've cut me deeply.
Currently listening to the Lake Placid 83 monster. See? Start with 68 and segue seamlessly into 83. It's all good.

nah, I'm thinking that Buster Keaton would be far more appropriate; after all, his watermelon was blue.

You have no idea. My commute is driving East and I take a route that takes me through the Camelback Mountain region (many mulit-million dollar homes scattered up the side of hills and valley along the road). Because of the time I am on the road (about 5:45), I get an amazing display of light as sunrise is just beginning. An Arizona sunrise is something special and if you throw in the desert mountains, you can't help but feel awed. And THEN you thow in some smoking jams and you almost faint.

Have you had the chance to search for Jack Straw's grave?

There was a skelaton that appear on the banks of a wash near Toostoned, the dude was like 7 foot tall. It may be Jack Straw, but I think it was the Wichita Line Man. Jack Straw did pick me up hitchin' once and left me in Boulder. I later ran across Jack Straw in Irvine, we caught some thief's in the tape bag ........That's all I need to say about that.

Now why would I be looking for the grave of the former British Foreign Secretary, currently Leader of the House of Commons and Lord Privy Seal? He's not dead yet. Or maybe you are referring to the leader of the English Peasants' Revolt in 1381. Pretty sure he's not buried in Arizona.

Just as a footnote for anyone who cares about such things, the show that circulates as 1/22 Eagles Auditorium could well be from another date. We only have documentation for Eagles Auditorium shows on 1/26 and 1/27 for this tour.

I have this info in my notes for this show so it probably came from Deadlists and may be somewhat dated.

You know I'm on that train. This is the primal Dead. The swing for the bleechers Dead. It is nice that there is such a good record of what they were up to, even if the tapes are a bit butchered here and there. Clementine--sure it seems unfinished , but it's still great The genesis and development of Dark Star, expanding for 30 more years like a nova.

And then a quick jump to the end of 1968--you can see such a clear difference in such a short time!!!!

Yeah, that's the stuff.
