You oenophiles may be familiar with the 50-100 point wine rating scales used by Robert M. Parker Jr, Wine Spectator Magazine, Allen Meadows (Burghound), Clive Coates and others. Cliff finds the five star rating system here at the archive to be too inflexible and uses a 100 pt scale based on Robert Parkers Wine Advocate that factors in both the music performed and sound quality... 98-100 pts An extraordinary show of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic show. These are "the best of the best". Profound musicianship and jamming, a thrilling setlist, and perfect or near perfect sound quality. Shows of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, download, own, and consume! 96-98 pts An outstanding show of exceptional complexity and character. Absolutely must own shows. The playing/jamming is performed at an extremely high-level. The sound quality is excellent by the standards of the period, however minor sonic anomalies (hiss) or cuts may be present. In short, these are phenomenal shows! 94-96 pts An excellent show. High-level playing/jamming, but perhaps with some lapses or inconsistencies. Shows may contain some sonic anomalies, however they are still easily enjoyable. These are shows that you absolutely must hear, and most aficionados will still wish to collect. 92-94 pts Well above average shows, definitely worth the listen and likely a download as well. There may be some moments of brilliance, but perhaps marred by significant sonic issues or lapses/inconsistencies in playing. 90-92 pts Barely above average to very good for the period displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character. The set-lists and playing may not be entirely inspiring, sonic annoyances may detract somewhat from the listening experience, but these shows still provide enjoyment! 89-90 pts An average show with little distinction except that it is competently played. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous show.

I knew this...but of course, that's probably because you explained it to me.

Love the system. Love the shows and the links and reviews.

That's what makes sampling wine or the DEAD so much fun.

I'm grateful for this explanation of your point system! One question: Is it possible to dip below 89 points?

You can go as low as you'd care to, however, with the literally hundreds of 95+ point shows, and plenty of 93 point Rhone's and Spanish wines going for less than $20, why would you want to?

Cliff,
you may know this...a friend of mine told me that there is an "adult" film star that has a wine that is supposedly one of the best in the world. I guess it is in the 94-95 range. Any idea on this? Could care less about the star but if you know the vino I'd be interested.

Dude- that is my favorite wine magazine- I was just reading the newest yesterday- looking forward to the 2005 Bordeaux's to start coming out- meanwhile the 2005 Beujolais are incredibly good for under $20- great wines for a picnic for sure.

I am also a big Rhone fan- love the grenache grape myself- also a fan of sangiovese- so it is super tuscans for me when I can afford it.

Did you catch the last decanter article on champagne? In the article they broke down about 20 of the most popular non-vintage bruts and informed of the number of crus that go into the blend, how far back in years the crus go, how long the juice is disgorged before bottling, and the percentage of each grape type used among Pinot Noir, Chard and Pinot Meunior

Speaking of Grenache I had a 96 Rayas the other day, it was dynamite.

Sometimes Gigondas can be alittle too peppery for me.

Cliff digs Cote Rotie!

Worked as a wine buyer for a while so I was able to put a way a couple hundred bottles. Guigal La La's, raveneau chablis, lots of mixed cellar treasures, even some 82's! Too poor now to buy wine now!

Sure, just sample the majority of shows from 84-86 and 92-95, you can dip way below on those

Ah, now your system makes complete sense. I've listened to many of your recommendations. Thank you.
