hey all,
i've got a question aimed towards the people with a more technical understanding of how this all works. Can all the archive shows be seeded(if this is the correct term) as BT's? I understand that BT is peer-to-peer but cant the first seed be from the archive? Then, if someone else goes to download the same show at the same time it would be leeched from archive as well as from the other leecher? Same concept as BT know but with a non-peer seed. I'm just curious if this would work and what would be the draw backs of implementation. Even if only one person was pulling down a show the BT aspect wouldn't be functioning, but that's no different than people d/l from the Archive now. Curious to hear reasonings.

cheers

I just happened across this old thread and have a note to add from a different angle. Now that there's bt.etree.org, people can conveniently help *independently* seed items that are already hosted here. Here's how it might work:

-Get a copy of a favorite show from the archive.
-Torrent it for seeding at bt.etree.org
-Put a review on the show here on the LMA item, pointing out the additional availability through bt (give bt.etree.org itme's url)
-Once you stop seeding the bt or it's otherwise petered out, go edit or delete your review here to remove the bt pointer.

This could be nice for shows that a fan might deem "overlooked gems". The fan can help to raise their profile yet shift load off archive.org for them at the same time.

I dont see the point in this.. 90% of the time your never going to get the speeds in a bit torrent that you would just straight downloading from archive... out of the 20 torrents I have done in the past im lucky to get over 90k.. on here I often get over 300k downloads...

it seems to me Bit Torrent serves a purpose as being the point from which folks can get shows..from bands that opted out of archive, that arent taper friendly or pirated movies and software..of course they are exceptions..

my 2 cents..

I'm just curious if this would work and what would be the draw backs of implementation.

This was originally proposed when the LMA first came into the community, and Archive.org had a lot less bandwidth than they do now. Most downloaders were getting 12-15KB/sec. If I remember correctly, the drawback of this idea is that to run it we would have to open up a separate process for each show on the server - that would be a hell of a lot of resources eaten up. In addition, it wouldn't pay off from a bandwidth perspective unless there were 5 or more folks downloading the same show at the same time - and as it has been pointed out, bandwidth isn't much of a problem around here right now. :)

Ah, here's an old thread about it. Note Jon's post.

P.S. IAFM, mentioned in the thread, is not active right now.

thanks brad. just thought it was an interesting concept. i remember the days when it was 12k-15k and i guess it would've been a better solution then. i also never really thought of the IAFM as a peer-to-peer but i guess it's exactly what i was talking about. i actually don't think i even realized that it wasn't around anymore.

thanks for your quick answer.
