All of this speculation SUCKS!!! I guess we'll all just have to wait & see. I don't understand why if GDP was able to put out 13 download releases in 12 months, why Rhino couldn't have have had at least 3-5 releases out by now!?!? Certainly 5-7 releases by the end of June. I'd ultimately like to know how much say the folks at GDP have over what's released, and whether any band members are considered part of this "group" @ GDP. I cannot imagine they just signed away total control to Rhino.

If it is 2/19/71 I’d have to rate this news pretty highly on the letdown scale. With so much new material being introduced and Mickey leaving, this was an extremely uneven run of shows, although I’ve argued in the past that on the whole it’s underrated (one of the best moments of the run -the jam out of Wharf Rat on 2/18- has already been released). Plus, as others have noted, relatively high quality copies have circulated heavily for years- it’s hard to imagine anyone into ’71 who doesn’t at least have a couple of these, if not all of them. I guess ultimately I’m just disappointed that, with Lord only knows how many unreleased multi-tracks to choose from, they came up with such an uninspiring (to me) selection. Personally, and I’m certain I’m in the minority here, I’d really like to see another “Fallout from the Phil Zone”-type release more than any one single show. I used to be a “whole show or no show” kind of guy, but as I’ve gotten older I find myself increasingly less concerned with continuity. It really doesn’t bother me to have songs from different shows or even different eras lined up next to one another as long as the music snaps and crackles.

For what it's worth, Ihor Slabicky, Rhode Islander, Dead Head extraordinaire, and author of The Compleat Grateful Dead Discography (http://tcgdd.freeyellow.com/tcgdd.txt), lists "Three from the Vault" as the 2/19/71 show from the Capitol Theatre, Portchester, NY, mixed from the multitracks, that had been planned for release in the fall 1992 but was "put on hold" by Phil Lesh.

As I recall, GDP had a multi-disc package of the Winterland shows from November '73 worked up and ready for pre-order right before the consummation of the exclusive-license arrangement with Rhino. GDP pulled this package from its online store before orders could be taken and filled. This may well transpire as "Three from the Vault," but that's mere speculation on my part.

Best to all,

I'm pretty sure the 73 Winterland shows were slated for DP release, since they're only 2-track, while the Vault releases typically come from 16-track recordings.

The Winterland box set had an actual link posted to the Dead's site. The link showed the box cover--identical to the Fillmore West design--and listed the songs and the price. Allegedly, it was an "inadvertent" link--pulled as soon as a handful of folks pre-ordered the box. So--not a DP, but a full-blown release from multitrack. It remains a mystery.

No--two tracks. I'm pretty sure the text here was drawn from the gdstore mockup:

Hey guys--checking in and would have to agree. Of course, I'd always go for a 68 show myself, but given #2, that wouldn't be right, I suppose. Might have picked another month for 71, but suppose they already did April. And some from the fall via DPs.

Will have to check it out, of course.

It occurs to me that the fact of 2-19-71 still being up on LMA argues against its being the 3ftV release. The 69 Fillmore shows were pulled months before the 10CD release was announced. We'll see.

Lousy choice if it is 2/19/71.

Not b/c of Pig, but b/c, as noted, the show has been widely circulated and available for a long time. The vault series should be about re-mastering more hidden gem type shows, improving sound quality of such shows, and adding lots of extras in packaging to attract sales.

this does not meet that standard. Of course, i'd like to see some shows from the '77-'79 years featured. Not a lot done there officially, especially '78 to '79.

On that subject, I did note some months ago that the 3-18 to 3-20-77 run from Winterland was missing from LMA. I can't imagine they'd limit a release of that to just two CDs, but one wonders why those shows were taken down. 3-20 is a great show and fits on two CDs.

Ooh--sorry to keep replying to myself (at least I'm not using multiple handles to do so), but that would explain why it's called THREE from the Vault (three shows from the 18th to the 20th). And being from Winterland, it may have been recorded in 16-track. But just 2 CDs?!?

Yes, i'd love to see that March Winterland run as an official release....or Red Rocks '78, perhaps 7/7 and 7/8?

It's cheaper at Barnes and Noble, if you're looking to buy a pig in a poke:

Hey there Tiger,
The skuttlebut in the smegs community is that this will be a "best of Pigpen" release, bits and pieces of his best from different shows, possibly some from 2/19/71. Or, you may be right, it may be 2/19/71 in its entirety.

1. A Pigpen compilation is a nice idea, but we've had many recent releases that featured Pig - the "Ladies and Gents Fillmore East 1971", as well as some 1971 and 1968 download series too. I love Pigpen, but is this the best they could do?
I dare say 2-3 CD's of only Pigpen songs is not going to sell very well.

2. 2/19/71 - interesting that they might pick this one. It's one of my top ten for 1971, even though many people prefer 2/18/71. A good show, no doubt.
But even my Granny has this show by now!! All the Capitol Theater shows have circulated widely for 15 years, and every serious Dead collector already has all 6 shows anyway. Surely Rhino and GDP could think of something more special than this?

I think it's obvious by now that they have no intention, or the means, to even begin to release the vault to us, even as MP3 downloads, iTunes or anything else.
Remember all those promises by GDP about "great new possibilities" when the SBD's were pulled? Not opening THAT can of worms again. But only 2 vault releases in a year so far? Not a very promising score.
Somebody, at least at Rhino, deserves an A+ for trying to put out good quality product (if it wasn't for Rhino we wouldn't have half the old albums on CD now available) and the 12/31/76 release sounds great. But I think the marketing department still has its head up its ass.

Phil?? Rhino?? Hello?? We want whole shows, are you listening? Do you want to make money? How about the missing summer of 1970? How about some missing 1981 or 1982 SBD's that don't circulate?
Do you poor slobs need some help picking good shows? I know about 1 dozen people here on LAMA that would love a job !!
Tell us where to send a resume. You guys need some help.

keeping my money,
Dr. Flashback :-)

The Pig anthology was a humor rumor I posted here last week--before the announcement (what a choice coincidence!) : http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=121518 The odds of it being Portchester, I feel, are slim as there are problems with the Betty Boards. A Portchester complilation would nonetheless be a nice box, although it would end up mimicing the Fillmore East box. As for complete concerts--you can download them. But only a small percent of the potential market does so these days. LL or Dime are a pain in the ass to many folks--FLAC and SHN seem to challenge them, or they are on dialup, or whatever it might be. So think globally. Here is a link where someone attributed my post to Rhino: http://www.phantasytour.com/dead/boards_thread.cgi?threadID=1306018 I'm still ROLFing.

You really gotta watch what you say. I've seen (and corrected) that same rumor on two other forums. Congratulations!

BTW, I hear it's going to be an in-depth survey of performances of Mexicali Blues throughout the years. I only regret they limited it to 2CDs.

So this is how rumors get started.

I'm going to laugh all day.

Some more information:

The bonus disc will consist of the unfinished solo material Ron was working on at the time of his death. It will include studio versions of originals including "Empty Pages," "The Stranger," "I'm Going to Rip Off Your Head and Shit in It," and his stomper, "Goin' to the City For Some Nitty Gritty Titty."

Can't wait!
