Wonder why they stopped playing Masons? Could it be that the vocal harmonies ALWAYS sounded terrible? Perhaps because most versions start out kinda sketchy before tightening up during the first instrumental break? Maybe there is some quasi-political reason (it is about Altamont)? Whatever, it certainly was a thrilling Jam vehicle, complete with two extended instrumental breaks that NEVER sounded the same, and NEVER disappointed... There can be NO DOUBT that this is the very best ever version! Both jams are truly amazing and contain "Bare Wires" Garcia leads that may be the closest to Jers leads during the H2H of 8/6/71 that you will ever hear! Please be careful with this... UPDATE - Just streamed this version and although I am an atheist, I did in fact see god during the second mind-bending jam! http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-12-28.sbd.cotsman.8999.sbeok.shnf The second hottest version? It was played live less than 20 times in total in 1969 and 1970. It has recently been revived by Phil Lesh & Friends, and by "The Dead". from dead.net

Excellent post. It might be relatively rare, but that doesn't mean it's a great song. Far from it in my opinion.

Im going to have to respectfully disagree with skuzzlebutt!

As awful as some of these vocals are, the amazing jam breaks within more than compensate!
