Ive been on a 79 kick as of late. What are some of your fav. shows from 79? Preferably from after Keith's departure as i have heard most if not all of those shows.

Peace

Actually I used to think that 1971 was the best year,
until I recently heard a lot of 1979 after Brent joined.
I really think that 1979 was their really funkiest, most fabbo year with a lot of the energy not heard since '71.

I would have preferred it if they had stayed with one drummer though, as I really think two really clutters the sound and leaves less room for Phil.

Try 25/10/1979 or 27/10/1979 (the Franklin's Tower is truly awesome !).

Billy and Mickey really rock together, no doubt. But I did like the simple clean sound of one drummer. The music was "unencumbered" if that makes sense.

without mickey the insatiable ouroboros was far less likely to raise it's head from the muck and thrash it's tail!

I hate to say it but you have to drop Mickey. 1972-1974 are some of the best and I know what that sounds like. So I am going with what I know.

Ya, if you had to pick one...you gotta go with the true backbeat from The Gang of One.

Most of the fall tour is quite hot; I'm partial to Buffalo 11/9, and many swear by Cape Cod (10/27). One of THE great overlooked tours in GD history, at least in terms of official releases.

11-24-79, San Diego The China/Rider opener alone will crush you against the wall. This one even got Cliff's attention. Which is almost impossible to do after 77. But just about any show from the Fall and Winter 79 tours is outstanding. One of the better string of shows the band ever put together (IMHO). Seemed like Jerry got re-energized by the introduction of new blood.

I agree with SDH about the Fall Winter 79 shows. A couple of my favs are the run Nov 30 & Dec 1 (Stanly), Dec 9 (Kiel), and Dec 10-11 (Soldiers & Sailors). Heck pick anything out of Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec 1979 and you can't go wrong.

Not the "best" but often overlooked as an early Brent show... 5/11/79 at Billerica Forum, Lowell Mass. Was a surprise announcement to the Boston crowd, I was there and remember a pretty cool show. Brent got sick so no encore. Show never got the second set going in terms of a good segue>segue> etc. more song by song....BUT, some really, really good, tasteful stuff throughout... Black Peter comes to mind as a keeper.

I posted some photos I took of this show before... they should still be out there, but if you can't find then reply to this post and I'll re send them!

You may want to check out 9/1 and 9/2, and the Garden run from 9/4 to 9/6, especially the last 2 some real nice stuff from the northeast.

Masonic Temple, Detroit 1/21/79. This show was a superb and fitting end to the often-overlooked but outstanding Snowbelt Tour. The weather in Detroit was God-awful, which led the band to start late and, as Bobby acknowledges, to play late. The sonic quality of the audience recording is decent despite unfortunate midrange piano distortion. The music itself is incendiary and compelling. Strong, clear vocals (without Donna, who had flown home after a fistfight with Keith), flavorful Garcia con brio (especially in the coda of "Looks Like Rain": a remarkable cascade of thirty-second notes), and pronounced and effective dynamics, all heard consistently throughout a thematically rich twelve-song first set and an expansive second set, conspire to make this an unusual yet oddly comforting end to the tour. Very enjoyable indeed. http://www.archive.org/details/gd79-01-21.aud.cole.19083.sbeok.shnf Best to all, deadhead66
