Forum: GratefulDead Subject: MESSAGE FROM ADMIN

Hi, Obviously there's been quite a bit of uproar about some posters being unwelcome in this forum. This is an unmoderated forum. IA is a nonprofit site with very few employees, and definitely not enough manpower to read all of the posts here. Even if we did read all the posts, we're really not big fans of censoring others. The posters many have been singling out for "banishment" don't appear to be breaking our terms of service in any way. So, for the whole community, I'm setting this out as clearly as possible. You may email us with a request to remove a post/poster for the following reasons: - obvious advertisement (commercial spam) - serious hate speech, advocating violence against another person, etc. - pornography And that's about it. We will not remove posters just because you don't happen to like them, or because you *suspect* they might be someone you don't like.
And the whole world full of petty wars
Singing I got mine and you got yours.

To Alexis-

Thank you for taking the time to clarify. Your statement was badly needed. Things here have been in an uproar. Many of us like coming to this place for maybe as many reasons as there are participants, but I believe we all agree that something needed to be done in order to get our discussions back on to a positively focused track. I, for one, hope that just a little outside intervention will make a big difference now that we know where things stand administratively.

Nice choice for a song quote, too.

Best regards,
Bryan E. Smith

To my fellow Dead Heads and whoever else reads this stuff (myself included):

Though it's been said many times, many ways: Merry Christmas-no wait, that's not what was said many times, many ways. What's been said is that if you are somehow irked, irritated, or even angered by what someone posts you have the choice to:

1. Let it go. Blow it off. Fuggeddaboudit! The commentary here is not worth getting yourself all worked up to the point that you might suffer a stroke.

2. Step back, take a deep breath, count to 10, then reply intelligently, without using your computer keyboard as a surrogate baseball bat to somebody's head.

And above all, if you think somebody's using two different screen names, then you think somebody's using two different screen names. Like Alexis said, unless the guidelines mentioned are violated, then it's little more than a need someone has to see his words posted on the net just as much as he possibly can. In the meantime, other than getting yourself all fired up about it, consider putting your energy to a more positive cause beyond ostracizing the multiple-posting pinheads. It just doesn't matter.

That having been said, I need to grab one of the Jerry Band CD's AshesRising sent me and head to work.

Hey Dire--so was I wrong or did they not used to have a problem with multiple posters?

I have been harping on not letting it all bother you as an individual poster, and I do believe you can still come here and be productive in spite of the BS, but I also have no problem with a 'rulebook.'

no man - you were right on because i was called out on the several years back (innocently due to email issues)

apparently it is now a free for all, so i take Alex's post as a total bullshit response.

She has added nothing - Diana was the only mod on here that added anything positive anyway other than Tyler - but he has been absent regarding this.

You are right - she ignored you because she didnt know what to say

The fact that Diana doesn't have the time/energy to be around anymore says enough in itself in my opinion.

Makes Alexis point pretty valid.

Hi Dire,

I'm one of two non-programmer employees in the collections group at the archive. Collections takes care of Movies, Audio, Software, and Education.

That means that between the two of us, we have to deal with the 24,000+ new items that users upload every month, the hundreds of error reports filed every week, hundreds of emails sent into our general email inbox, large collection holders who want to donate their movies/audio/etc to the archive, plus various other projects. I'm also working on a large cataloging project called the Open Library. I have more stuff to do every single day here than I even remotely have time for.

So when I say I don't have time to spend half my day monitoring this GD forum, I'm not copping out. It's just the truth.

My suggestion is that you monitor yourselves by ignoring posts that you don't like.

Alexis

I remember this one time, I was at some city fest in Michigan havin a goooood time and for some reason I would walk up to random people and say in a conspiratory tone "it's all done with mirrors."

day went on and like it almost always does it turned into night, city fest was still going gooood and some older lady (I was only maybe 16 at the time) came up to me and said in a conspiratory tone, "it's all done with mirrors."

Man that sure did trip me out.

Thanks Alexis--I can completely appreicate your situation. I was only pushing the point since I had been told that "multiple posting" (ie, someone logging on with different "names" from one "system") was a no-no, but I can understand if there just isn't the time or interest to play big brother.

We are all big enough to take care of ourselves, and as Dancin says, should just say "thanks" to you and be on our way.

Meant no offense.

hey alexis - like i said i meant no offense, im very sorry if you took it that way. i know that this is not your area.

diana was different - this was "her" area before she decided to leave.

you are absolutely right - we need to "police" our own forum and shouldnt be gradeschool looking for the teachers to take care of things for us. sorry that some or all of us have come across that way. you know that I feel that you, tyler, ed, and the rest do a great job here. we just get a bit out of control once in a while. i am just as guilty as the rest (even though i look as it as fun at times)

thanks for what you do Alexis - like i said - i was not calling you out - sorry if it seemed like i was. I love this site - you know that - both of us have been here a long time.

Peace

dire

Thanks. Great advice.

However, the one concern that you didn't address is whether or not you control multiple posters from a single IP address. I assume not? IE, one can be many posters simply by entering one email address each time?

Suppose in the interest of 'freedom' the answer is 'no' you do not limit such activity, but in the past, it was indicated that the Admins DID frown on and even prevent this when it was brought to their attn.

No problem, personally, with your approach either way--just curious.

Will – I don’t want to pre-empt any response from the admins but logically how could you prevent multiple use from a single IP? For example, my daughter, my partner and I all have different email addresses, but they all originate from the same IP. Even so, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t each have our own virtual library card for the archive if we all wanted one. How could the archive distinguish genuine multi-users such as us from one person using multiple names? I would suggest that they cannot and do not.

Yep. That is why I put it the way I did. However, given most of us post as individuals (I really cannot believe two people in one place would belong to this group, but I take the point in principle), I for one would be fine with imposing the limitation...

In any event, my question stems from prior remarks from folks back when that this indeed was how Smi2les was eliminated...

I can live with it either way, as frankly, I have not been bothered by the troublemakers or any of the responses. Far cry from my earlier "save the forum!" battle cries, eh? Live and learn.

Don't we feel like a bunch of six year olds at this point? This message really hits at the heart of things. No one has been hurt, no one has been assaulted (physically), and no one has been seriously threatened. Lets just grow some thicker skins and move on. If certain folks want to post unflattering stuff, that is their right, whether most of us like it or not. This community is made up of many different people with many different viewpoints. Lets try to keep it that way. Did you like everybody you ever met at a show? I know I didn't. Why should this place be any different?

Ooops... sorry for the dictation. My bad.

Echoing William Tell: what people here most object to is the proliferation of alter-egos by one poster. It's good to know who you are talking to in such a close-knit community of wackos.
