I was at work when scott muni the dj for wnew ny announced the
news. He played PITB and asked people to call in with memories and request. The rest of the day till 12 midnight all they played was gd music. I remember someone requesting China Doll
and although i have always loved that song it sorta has always
had a more special meaning since then.

It was more or less meaningless the day it happened, for me. I had long since distanced myself from the current DEAD and was already a 60s fanatic. I thought he was not going to make it out of the 80s, healthwise, so it was not a shock at all at the time...
After a month or so, I got the picture of Jerry and Mtn Girl out of a magazine (those that know the early days know the pic), and put it on my door at work...the only picture there for 12 yrs...
In all this time, only one person has recognized the two of them (I mean even Jerry, much less Caroline). Nonetheless, I have always thought that picture was the perfect tribute.

Yep, Scrim--that was my moment...I had 'left' them a few yrs before, thought that 'that' was the end, and each yr expected the news...since I had 'deserted' them (in terms of active touring), it was less emotional when it came.
I came 'back' after his death, and hope he is okay with that.

on the beach in Brigantine, NJ, listening to JGB Saddlerack 3/7/82. Somebody came up and relayed the terrible news - I didn't believe it until I turned on MMR out of Philly and heard Pierre Robert playing Morning Dew ...
Also saw dolphins jumping in the surf that day, and what looked like a B-2 stealth bomber fly overhead - the contrast seemed appropriate. A surreal day, indeed.

Very similiar to SomeDarkHollow. I was on a drug run and the radio station played 3 or 4 Dead songs in a row. I thought to myself: This cant be good. As the last chord of Ripple rang out the DJ reported the bad news in a very respectful tone. I pulled right over to the side of the road and completely broke down.
Once I got home (and very high) I loaded up the CD player and turned up the 350 watt system. To my surprise, my asshole neighbor let me listen to 7 hours of very, very loud music. He didnt call the cops once, and politely asked me to turn it down around 11 pm. I was somewhat alright until Brokedown Palace randomly came on(consequently, I couldnt listen to Brokedown for years). The volume went back up and I broke down again, right as my girlfriend got home from work. To look up and see her face looking at me, I knew I was in rough shape. I shut the stereo back down and sat in total darkness for the rest of the night. God I miss that man. RIP JERRY

Max and Erma's in Lexington, KY for a lunch with my girlfriend (had the day off). Needless to say, she drove me home that day (I had alot, I mean alot of Knob Creek whiskey for lunch that day). One of the grayer days of my life for sure.

I can't believe it!! Someone from home?? Maybe. Are you still in Lex? Did you go to the candlelight vigil at Woodland Park that night? It was heavy, very heavy. Probably 300 hippies at least, many of which I've never seen again.
Used to see a lot of tie-dyes on the street in Lex in those days. And Belinda had her store - Grateful Threads there near the park. Amazing how straight and uptight a town can get in ten years. Times have changed. Even Lynaugh's closed.
But I digress. Get back in touch, would love to correspond or chat if you're still in KY.
Been listening to the Dead all day. Right now just started 10/25/89, part of the incredible fall 89 tour.

I was at Woodland Park that night, it was a very heavy scene for sure.
I am not in Lexington, KY anymore; have moved to Columbus, OH. I miss Lexington very badly actually, it is a great place. I lived there for 9 years, I was the General Manager at the Perkins (Richmond Road) for 6 years. Had alot of great times down there. Great bluegrass and band scene down there.

My girlfriend called me at work to give me the bad news. Not believing that it was true, I quickly tuned into a classic rock station which was right in the middle of China>Rider from Europe '72. I knew immediately that Jerry was gone. I left the lab and made my way to a secluded spot in the cooler and had a good cry. That night I attended a memorial gathering outside of the Nautica Pavilion in Cleveland. RIP Jerry. Thank you for your brilliance.

Sitting in my work van in an underground parkinglot ready to fix someone's PC. Took the wind right out of me. Started getting paged from friends, coworkers, and family -- they knew a part of me, a part of my family, had moved on.
That night I sat with my 3-yr old son and listened to a retrospective/remembrance of Jerry on NPR's Talk of the Nation, incredibly sad knowing that not only would those tasty Spring Tours come to an end, but that I'd never have a chance to take my son to a show (since we danced to the music all the time).
When he took a nap, I cried a little (no, actually, a lot), then listened to some tapes (remember those??).

Someone told me at about 11:30 AM, and I spent the rest of the day just feeling absolutely wiped out, completely empty inside. At an Upper West Side pub that night, hearing the line, "Anybody's choice, I can hear your voice," was what sealed it for me, and I completely broke down. A girl gently touched my shoulder and said, "It's going to be alright." That felt good. Even now, though, I still have to fight back the tears thinking about that moment.

Was Working and suddenly I noticed they were playing 2 bootleg Dead songs in a row on the radio which happened just about never. By the time The third song, To lay Me Down came on I told my friend that this really can't be good news I fear. For once I wished I was wrong but the radio announcer confirmed my worries at the end of the song. Tried to continue work but ended up curling up with a bottle of four roses whisky. Took me ten years to recover but I can now again listen to the Dead with joy instead of tears. Most of the time anyway.

In Nashville TN, driving back home from visiting a machine builder for work. It was really sad news at the time but I don't remember being really shocked. I do miss the shows and hearing Jerry and the boys play live, but I am happy about a few things:
- that I found this music in the first place (now it's stuck in my heart and I don't want it to come out - ever)
- that I saw the few shows that I have
- that it still makes my feet go and makes my face smile
- and it's here to listen to after all these years

I was at work, and I was really surprised how easy the news went down. I was expecting it sooner or later, and was prepared for it. But it was still weird.
For many of us, though, it was a new awakening. A new day. Everything was going to be a little different from that point on. I tightened the laces on my shoes, put my chin out, and marched into the war we call life with a new perspective. It was almost like parting ways with your baby blanket. The security was gone.
We are here, we are on our own.

Scrim pretty much summed up my experience. I too was at work and when someone told me; I was rather surprised at how unsurprised I felt. It was not a shock as anybody who'd seen the Spring tour could tell, one way or another the scene had evolved into something ugly and was coming to an end. It's too bad though that that's how it had to end.
It wasn't until a couple of weeks later that it really hit me though...and then I was a mess. Here's to you Jerry, for touching and enriching so many people's lives.

Drive through at a Taco Bell while listening to the radio. When I turned it on they were playing Ripple and I thought "That's weird. This station hardly ever plays the Dead, and especially not this song". As soon as the song ended, the DJ repeated the news. Kind of lost my apetite and don't remember much of the rest of my work day. Attended a candle light "be-in" in the Papago Peaks park that night. One of the more emotional gatherings I've ever been to.

Alone at my former farm in South Carolina...flipping through the stations and landing on CNN. Those awful words took my breath like nothing ever had before. I went out back in the field and sat on a stump for hours...
Four days later the same sad news came about Mickey Mantle, my childhood hero. It was a tough August.
Gone but never forgotten.

I was visiting my father and he asked "What was the name of that band that you used to follow around?" I told him. "What was the name of their lead singer?" I told him again. He then told me he died. My father is famous for putting people on, so I didn't believe it. A few hours later, he and I were in the car and he had on Rush Limbaugh, who was talking about it. Rush was saying how he couldn't see why people were so upset about the death of a drug addict, etc (kind of ironic looking at it now). The whole experience was so surreal.
I hadn't seen that many shows since 90 for a variety of reasons, so I was somewhat out of touch with the scene. Based on what I had heard about him, I was not surprised at the time. I was saddened by the news, but not devastated. I think I was in denial. I did not feel the totality of the loss until a couple weeks later, when I was listening to a He's Gone from MSG 87 and then it hit me full on, and I became a blubbering mess.

As opposed to irony, I think it's actually called hypocrisy. And if I'm not mistaken, Limbaugh's ragging on Jerry after he died was a big factor that inspired Al Franken to write his book, Rush Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot.

I'm no expert on Limbaugh (and never heard that about Franken's book), but I was assuming that Rush was not addicted to painkillers when Jerry died.

Yep...I awoke to the phone that day. My touring buddy Chris was obviously crying...said "have you heard"? And right there, I knew Jerry was gone. Actually, I was somewhat bitter. After all the years and all the "recoveries".........I thought maybe he was headed in the right direction.
I was very sad, but not suprised.:(

walked in the door at work and 2 people were there to greet me with the news. One of my bosses asked me if I wanted to go home. She said that she was at harvard when Lennon was killed and her professor cancelled a class the next day so she thought to return the favor. I stayed at work but thought that was kind of cool. Oh, and of course, my tickets to Blockbuster pavillion in Devore CA were waiting for me when I got home

i was sitting in my office at work when a friend called me up. he just said "the Dead guy's dead." I just replied "what???" He said "dude.... Jerry's gone." We both just hung up, I shut the door to my office and just in silence for awhile. After a bit, i turned on some tunes (no recollection of show or songs) - and proceeded to write Jerry a poem. Still remember watching a few tears stain the paper.

Driving back from a.m. Physical training from Schofield Barracks 25th ID Hawaii army base to my housing. I remember driving next to the pinneapple fields in Helemano, and hearing the news on radio. Bad Bad memory.

I was at a research conference held in a prep school in Meriden, NH (Kimball Union Academy, I think) and I was waiting for a friend who was driving up from Worcester to join me. He calls me and tells me "the king is dead" and explains what happened. I did not believe him so I ran to the room that was serving as the on campus bar for the meeting and there it was on CNN. One of the other speakers was much more of a head than I, wearing tie dye and Jerry shirts all week. I did not get to him in time and he had to hear from some blonde woman who went up to him as he was eating lunch and said "hey that guy Garcia is dead."

Hey Elbow- my brother used to teach there. He met Rob Eaton there who is now playing "bobby" for Dark Star Orchestra. Are you from that area? Not to lose the vibe of this thread (but I was astounded to see KUA posted) I was in my basement unemployed and a DH buddy from college called me. Was supposed to play golf with a friend that afternoon and the radio station was doing an allday tribute. Held up pretty good til Stella came on when I was parking. Broke down like a baby. Went to a be-in down at a big park downtown- was an unbelieveable scene for St. Louis. Hundred of folks, everyone blaring their favorites. Such a sad yet together situation.

No Jody I was living in Chicago at the time but was up there for a conference. Scientists have been holding these things called Gordon Research Conferences in the summer in small colleges and prep schools in New England for years. It is a beautiful campus. After we found out about Jerry the other guy that I mentioned was to give his talk the next morning, he started out with a eulogy. I skipped it. Didn't want to share my feelings with a bunch of people I didn't really know so me an my friend that I went to all my dead shows with went and climbed a mountain up the road from the school and sat there and talked about Jerry and the band while looking out into Vermont (great view of killington from there).

At a Costco type food store in Hilo Hawaii by a bank of TV sets all of which had Jerry's face on them. At first I thought some new tour related hassles was being reported on since the previous month or two always had some news stories about gate crashing, bleachers and roofs collapsing and such things like that happening on the previous tour. Found out Jerry was gone and spent all night listening to tapes in shock..I'm still in shock.
I ambled over to a photo shop and had them scan a nice pic of Jerry on a black T-shirt with the words "Sleep In The Stars". I still have that shirt.

damn guys, just reading this i'm getting teary again-i heard the news on the radio up on Refridgerator Ridge, Kit Karson National Forest @ the Rainbow Nationals-i was coming back from west coast tour & stopped there to come down-i'd decided to stay till clean up 'cause i was too sketched out to be in cities at the time-anywho, thought it was just another rumor at 1st, "yeah, Jerry died again, whatever", but started checking different radio stations & heard the same over & over-i hitched into Taos & spainged until i had enough for a 1/5, then hitched back & traded a cast iron frying pan for a few bottles of sammy smith's porter @ Acamp-i spent the rest of the nite sitting on the hill in the dark, drinking & thinking, remembering the shows i'd just seen-can't say it was totally unexpected, but still a reality check-i remember a lot of confused people in the next few days, trying to figure out where we all went from here

I was watching MTV at home with my sister. They played Smells Like Teen Spirit, which I thought was kind of odd, because that had been out of rotation for a while (Kurt having departed this earth the year prior).
After Nirvana, Touch of Gray came on. For a few seconds my sister and I looked at each other in delight. Was this the dawning of some new era where all was well with the world?
The moment was fleeting, and the message that began to scroll along the bottom of the screen hit me like a punch in the stomach. I excused myself, and walked down to the river and cried.

I was 10 years old, had just woken up was watching MTV for some reason. Then I see a headline at the bottom saying Jerry Garcia had died, I immediately called me dad but he didnt pick up, so I called my mom and she had known about it from hearing on the radio...
weird how I was so young, and wasnt a listener of the Dead in my personal time back then but I remember that day so clearly
