I've only recently heard a couple of these scorching hot college shows from 1971, some not being archived at LMA.

Most of you are probably familiar with the Catholic Youth Center classic (4/13/71), but you may not have heard a couple of these high-energy performances from the bands April 1971 swing through the Quaker State.

While these shows are not as tight as the Port Chester run in February, or the monsters of the Fillmore East two weeks later, these performances crackle with energy and have a "bare-wires" intensity that seems to have disappeared with Pigpens hiatus and the addition of Keith a few weeks later.

While these performances are a little "loosey-goosey", the band is taking some chances and its paying off! Dark Star is conspicuously absent, but the superlative second set Jams more than suffice! The sound/mix of all these boards is near-perfect! While the set-lists are somewhat similar, the vibe is markedly different at each of these dynamite gigs!

Jerry is certainly on top of his game, but it is Phil who is most definitely driving the bus during many of these electrifying moments!

With some of the countries best small liberal arts colleges and top universities, Pennsylvania is a bastion of higher learning. Ya think any one's GPA suffered from attending these smoking shows during what must have been mid-term time for many heads?

4/15/71 Allegheny College - Meadville, PA

Notes: Sadly, several songs are missing and having played five shows in six nights, understandably the energy level and playing are not quite up to the preceding nights. Oh man, what a set up for GOP...I can hear him coming already with more on his beloved Apr, 71 period. Hey guy--great to have you back. And talk about having stayed up late to do your homework. Why, just the other day I was mentioned to friend here about how much effort you put into these lists...I am going to have to start really working harder I guess.
