I'm guessing that there are lurkers out there waiting for us to make recomendations for good audience recordings to download. Let's give them what they're looking for, and to the lurkers: respond to the thread and be heard. There are some great lossless recordings on this site, and they are refreshing to listen to after playing soundboards over and over. There is a certain feel to an audience recording that makes it feel like you are standing in the crowd watching the band play. Without further adu, I submit my pick of the day, Rochester NY, 9-02-80: http://www.archive.org/details/gd80-09-02.aud.skankweed.26458.sbeok.shnf And there was an excellent recomendation last week that can't be overlooked, Greek Theatre, 9-12-81: http://www.archive.org/details/gd81-09-12.aud.wise.25317.shnf Have a good show!

This one never fails to impress (Hollywood, 8-6-71): http://www.archive.org/details/gd71-08-06.aud.bertrando.yerys.129.sbeok.shnf And for my beloved 68, though quality is bad, worth suffering thru (Fillmore E, 6-14-68): http://www.archive.org/details/gd68-06-14.aud.cotsman.16532.sbeok.shnf

The first time I listened to 7-29-88, I thought it had to be a soundboard. It's as close as you can get.

that's exactly what I say too. HAS to be a Matrix then don't yo think?

During some of the heavy bass notes, the recording gets saturated completely. I would think that a matrix wouldn't distort on both sources. Also, it doesn't seem to have that matrix seperation, hard to describe how I hear it. I love matrix recordings, best of both worlds.

The first time I heard this recording I thought the heads found a work-around to the soundboard downloads. Call it an audience recording!

I'm guessing NAK 300 shotguns directly in front of the stacks, however I have never been there so it's hard to know.

But that may be the actual bass distortion. For one I'm pretty certain the sbd is that way and more importantly I knew a friend who was at this show and he always described how Phil's bass was so powerful and thick that you could feel it bounce off of you. Probably kind of like a punk driving 10 blocks away with his subwoofer only with actual good music?

If it was overloading at the soundboard, then it could be.

I recorded a concert at Deer Creek where the taper section was right smack dab in front of the monitors that played out over the lawn area. Pulling a number out of the air, I'd say 50 feet away. The source was so loud and clear that the recordings came out great. I wasn't using shotguns, but those who had them were pointing them directly into the speakers instead of at the bands primary monitors. I am guessing those recordings would sound like this one.

these will hold you in good stead until you can come across some fantastic audience recordings that are not available here at LMA; why audience sourced shows are no longer allowed to be uploaded here to the archive, i don't know, but many quite good listens definitely available

some that come to mind....wow, i have a hard time keeping the last four digits of my social straight....that;s a two-handful of shows my man and HEAVY on 80/81...

i do not mean this in a disingenous way at all... do you think 81 is the last great year?.....mind you i have been concentrating heavily on getting 68 - 72 striaght and really not listening to much else for the last 4-6 months....

i would say other than 77, most people on this site seem to mostly be into 80-83.....that has never been an era i found very interesting outside of the acoustic sets...maybe due to early exposure to DEAD SET/DEAD AHEAD ....

i am saving your recs for future ref, thanks.

BTW, the 7-10-81 eyes of the world has a VERY COOL JERRY SEGUE, i really like how he introduces the tune, SLIPPERY LIKE....but the TEMPO is just out of control, like he starts playing the riff and then everyone plays eyes AROUND IT...all the sudden they;'re goin MACH 10!

HL ... my heavy concentration on 80-81 is largely due to two reasons: 1) i've been listening to a lot of stuff from that era (and i would most certainly have included more from '82, but most of my AUD sources do not have links at LMA, which is a shame really, because as i mentioned in my original post, there are some incredible audience sourced shows that have come into existence since uploads were put a stop to), and 2) i don't know, but it seems to me that some of the more fantastic audience recordings came out of the years 79-82

the last great year? definitely everyone has their subjective opinion regarding this question, but for me it would have to be '82, which isn't to say that there aren't fantastic shows post-'82, because there are for sure, but i guess i haven't yet explored so much of that territory to make an informed opinion one way or the other; for one thing, the setlists don't quite do it for me as much, and truth be told, my years of choice would run as follows: 68 > 69 > early '70 > 72 > 73 > 79 > 81/82
