the zips are not corrupt, it´s just that panther is not able to unpack them right. i use untar for that, works fine. small, free, nice:

This is definitely worth knowing - can you independently confirm that this is a solution to the problem on affected machines (albeit not a perfect one), aaron m or anyone else?

To unpack the troublesome archives - ctrl-click/right-click the archive at the bottom of the contextual menu there will be an entry for the zip file which will drill down into the archive. Click on the file that you want to open and it will expand. I don't know if this is a part of StuffIt or the system, but I could not open the archives with either any other way.
