Okay, my brain is still leaking from the after-effects of Liam's fun mind exercise, and I've lost all impulse control, so here's another way of thinking the unthinkable:

How would you rank your favorite band members, songs, and years--all in one numerical list? Yes, this involves comparing apples and oranges. For example, which do you like better: Dancing in the Streets as a contribution to the band's setlists throughout the years, or all of the performances in 1974, or all of Pigpen's contributions to the band?

The following top 21 is my hastily-assembled first pass at such a ranking. Please don't read too much into it--remember, my brain is still leaking. I'm sure I've forgotten something obvious.

Kudos to the mention of Hunter and Owsley! Could proabably throw Kesey in there too maybe?

but MOST of you guys are whacked. NO mention of Bob hardly? You need to have your ears checked. Who the F is playing all the signature and UNIQUE hooks and themes in songs such as China Cat, Scarlet, Terrapin, 1/2 Step, and way too many more to even mention?

You can't even consider their musically most triumphant years 72-74 without Bob.

Or even 69. Consider this - do you really think that Jerry would have had the freedom to dance with his guitar without Bob filling in ( brilliantly imo ) the middle? Give me a break! The band would have been left in the dust a million

You should go immediantly to the NFA>GDTRFB>NFA on Skull and Roses and listen to it on headphones where each guitarist is on seperate channels. Then come back and see if he makes your top 20.

That is 100%, without a doubt correct.

I have become a Bobby admirer. I admit, it has taken a great deal of time for me to come around. I went to shows to see Jerry, but having access to so many shows of such superb quality(in every facet), I've been educated.

I knew Bob was a big part of the band(see 4/5/71, good, clear guitar interplay).

But man, the more you listen, the harder it becomes to discount his contribution. I think the 1973 recordings illustrate his efforts best.

I do agree with you here JOTS...I have difficulty picking out instruments, have no muscial training, etc., etc., BUT my focus on the early era has led to a number of instances when I figure out that Bob is doing something really amazing (again, I have no idea if it really is, but it sounds great to me) in any number of jams that I never noticed before, and certainly never picked up seeing them live (should have of course).

Good point. Also like seeing the importance of others (Bear, etc) as there were so many critical inputs to this amazing band...Like, San Francisco, Bill Graham, etc., etc., etc.

crap! I see I didn't finsish that one sentence. What I was going to add was the band would have been left in the dust like a million other classic rock bands without that crazy middle part. that's my opinion and I happen to think I'm right. As great as Jerry was, and Phil, and hell all of them, If Jerry did not have the freedom to pick and choose his leads, the freedom to inter twine, or to lay out, I don't think the music would have been what it is. Just take China Cat as a PRIME example. Listen to just what Jerry plays and tell me that song would have worked.

Just my opinion. Most will disagree. Plenty of people like the JGB way more than the Dead. I can see that point but as dynamic and soulful as Jerry's bands could be, I never got transported to strange lands by them like I did allmost everytime by the Dead.

Here is the perfect example to prove your point from an early era fanatic. Take the fall, 68, when Bob & Pig are 'fired'. The Heart(Hart)beat shows in Oct, lacking those two (Bob and Pig are absent; eg, 8th, 10th, etc), though nice, leave me flat. Others have sung their praises, but as a huge fan of that period, I don't see them as all that great (Matrix shows). HOWEVER, the two Avalon shows, 12th & 13th, ARE great, and Bob IS present, but not Pig.

So, no knock on Pig, but having Bob there on those two nights (again, relative to nights in the same month, same song sets, etc.), proves his value...most all agree those two nights are huge.

Bob rules.

1. Fall 1966: I first learned of bands with names like Grateful Dead and Big Brother when my father sent me letters with folded handbill flyers for Avalon Ballroom dance concerts from Experimental College at SF State College (SFSU now); he taught a seminar 2 doors down from where Fillmore & Family Dog tickets were sold (at Hut T-1, Experimental College). 2. Early 1969: I moved back to San Francisco, leaving a stable home with strict rules under my Mom and step-dad to begin the long strange trip it became for me sharing life with my beat-nik Pop. 3. Fabulous Furry Freak Bros: I had to get used to the stench of cat-spray and non-working toilets at the pads of my Dad's friends... I found the cost of freedom. 4. Tune In: First listened to free-form FM radio KSAN and KMPX within weeks of arriving. Mostly the DJs like Tony Pig, Stephan Ponic and Dusty Street talked a lot everytime I convinced my friends to turn on the radio, but one night while on the way to Mendocino with my Pop there was a mind-blowing uninterrupted program of heavy acid rock... on AM radio! We shared a timeless evening on the road in a VW Bug without saying a word while listening to the music. 5. 1st GD LP: Early '69, my radio-skittish neo con pals the Evans Bros show me the one weirdo record in their collection... the 1st Grateful Dead album. I'm allowed to stare at it for 15 seconds. Playing it was out of the question. 6. Turn On: Half a tab of Purple Owsley is the 1st mind altering trip I take, early 1970. 7. 1st Grateful Dead tape: Walking by the back lawn of Lowell High School, I overhear a freak playing his mono Craig cassette recorder... it pulled me right in, a catchy riff... I ask and he tells me it's Saint Stephen. He had taped it at a show (I presume now Feb. 1970). I decide I have to see this band live. 8. 1st live show: April 1970, Carousel Ballroom - Miles Davis, Grateful Dead. Later that year the best song performances I note at the time were Easy Wind, Alligator (with kazoos, not available on tape), Casey Jones, Truckin', St. Stephen, Dire Wolf, It's All Over Now (the song the Stones made popular), Morning Dew (more later)

hey, sorry I don't understand how this poll works.

But, re: my Eleven playlist project, I went with Lou Davenport's favorite The Eleven.

1966 - one way to better appreciate this year, well this is what I recently experienced while in the passenger seat of Jesse Block's Jeep...
he put on an early '66 GD concert, real loud as we drove around on a sunny day - itstarted off with Viola Lee Blues, with a "Swanee River" teaser intro (so, what date is that VLB from?)

It's funny, Jesse said it was from 1967.

Anyway, put on a '66 show real loud, in yer SUV, windows down, Victorian gingerbread scenery optional - you'll get it!

Viola Lee Blues (July 16th, 1966) on Birth of the Dead, disc 2 is the one I heard with the "Swanee River" teaser. Similar to the July 29th '66 VLB opening. I guess by the end of July they dropped the Swanee teaser. Lou Davenport picked the VLB I was trying to remember right off the top!

I fit in VLB through King Bee on the second BotD CD (the last few tracks as I was stacking firewood in the basement), and only missed the first inning. What a job Beckett did in the Sox/Angels game! And yes, I played it loud. Thanks for programming my mid-evening.

Will do. I'm going to put on the July 66 version that was included on Birth of the Dead, where Jerry (?) says at the end, "That was a song about jail." I'll have just time for it before the next ballgame starts.
