God, what a HUGE relief it is to hear (read?) people chattering about the Dead on this forum again!

In that spirit, for some time I've been mulling over posing this question to the LMA braintrust:

What do you think is the best performance of Eyes of the World from each year? I ask in part because it's an interesting question to debate, and in part because I'm looking for good performances from 74 and 78 without listening to every damned one.

I only have ideas for four years:

73: I love Winterland 11-11, as well as 10-25 from Madison and 12-18 from Tampa (thanks Max for pointing me to that one).

74: I'd go with 8-6 from New Jersey, but there's plenty I haven't listened to, or not in a while.

75: That's a toughie--8-13 is both very good and the only performance from that year.

77: I love Winterland 6-8 (having recently listened to it over and over again--hence this poll/query), and have also been impressed by 10-29.

So what are your favorites? Please!

2/9/1973

The first one. Has a very nice intro. The way it should be play IMHO.

A monumental question indeed. I will post a long time favorite. It may not be the absolute best, but there is one little snipit that makes it rise to the top for me. Afterall, the Eyes were at a peak of perfection in 73 and 74. At 1:29 you hear Bob exclaim, "Yeah!" It is small. Probably a blip on most people's radars. But to me it is the Boys in a groove and they are feeling it. I can just imagine Jerry giving Bob a sideways glance with that cheshire grin.

The Eyes alone is satisfying. Listen to the whole string and it is bliss.

BTW, this poll/query is dedicated to high flow, who can't imagine how anyone would be such a loser as to omit Eyes of the World from their dream GD show.

Lou for 1973 I really love 6/30 Universal Amp. Like I tell people about this gig...I came for the Dark Star but stayed for the Eyes.

6/9/76 has a fascinating, long pre-lyric jam from St. Stephen.

You know, I thought I remembered a good one from June. Maybe that's the one I was thinking of. Thanks!

I really like the one from Freedom Hall in '74. During the intro you can hear Keith playing around with Garcia's characteristic opening lines.
