Lots of great shows to pick from on John Lennon's birthday but I had to settle on this one for personal reasons. It is in many ways the beginning of my journey here. No I did not attend this show, that would not happen for mey for several years after this October day. This is the first tape of a Grateful Dead concert that I ever owned. I was in college and it was the summer of 84 and I was studying Pharmacology (seriously, it was a class not a lifestyle) with my friend Ricky. Ricky was a deadhead and he would listen to tapes constantly. I found myself really enjoying them having only heard studio albums and some of Europe 72 when I was much younger. I asked him to make a tape of some stuff for a newbie and 6 months later he came up with the second set of this concert. In retrospect it was the perfect show for the uneducated. Many of the versions of songs here are how I first heard them. Smokin HSF to start the set followed by Jack Straw. Then throw in some familar sounding tunes like Around and Around, Johnny B. Goode, Revolution and Smokestack Lightening and it was easy to get comfortable with this. Stella of course was a treat and the other songs in the second set were pretty easy to listen to as well. Ricky next hooked me up with 10/12/84 and 7/31/82 and I was hooked.
I took some notes as I listened to this old friend for the first time in a while but for the most part I wrote the same thing for every song. Well played, band sounds tight, Brent's vocals high in mix, Jerry has the old man's voice. So I am not going to go through every song.
The sound is pretty clean, although some aud patches throughout. A decent aud though so not a huge destraction.
In general, not a special show but well played and easy to listen to especially for a newbie.
