I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I'm looking for stand out versions of Dark Star from 1969, arguably the year the boys mastered that vehicle. There were so many Stars played this year and it's hard to figure out where to begin! I'm not too familiar with the ones played earlier in the year (February, March) save for the one on Live/Dead, which I obviously love, so any pointers here would be much appreciated.

The two that I like the most right now are 10/25 and 5/31, especially the latter for the prankster vibe that permeates it as well as the show on the whole.

I like this Dark Star quite a bit. I think it's pretty good.

This is where I first heard this particular Dark Star. Back when you could still download from the Taper's Section.

Even though I enjoy '72-'74 shows more than '69 shows. I think Dark Star> St. Stephen> The Eleven may be their best piece of music, and they perfected it in '69. Peace.

gdfiles just posted 4-21 and 4-22 1969 lossless, and you could get 4-23 from there too.

Do you already have 11/8/69 Fillmore disc 2 with the Dark Star weave?

I do! I can't believe I forgot to mention that one, it's a real scorcher to these ears.

Excellent recommendations folks, these ought to sufficiently distract me from my studies for a bit. ;)

Set I, Dark Star opener of my Birth-Day show, Fillmore 3-2-1969, always stands out for me.

I hope the "10" are enjoying there 1969 Fillmore fix...

One of the great underappreciated '69 Dark Stars has to be 08/03, which featured a sax and a fiddle in the mix. Although never identified, at least to my knowledge, I believe the mystery guests are Papa John Creach and A.C. Reed.

Off the top of my head, some of the top '69 Stars aside from the Live Dead one - 2/22/69 http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-02-22.sbd.owen.7860.sbeok.shnf 3/1/69 4/22/69** http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-04-22.sbd.clugston.68.sbeok.shnf 4/27/69 5/31/69 http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-05-31.sbd.oleynick.76.sbeok.shnf 6/27/69 7/7/69 http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-07-07.sbd.clugston.3116.sbeok.shnf 8/23/69 http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-08-23.sbd.stonebear.6639.sbeok.shnf 8/30/69 http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=150305 11/2/69*** http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-11-02.sbd.goodbear.1125.sbefail.shnf 11/7+8/69 http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-11-07.sbd.kaplan.19783.sbefail.shnf 12/4/69 http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-12-04.sbd.wizard.23975.sbeok.shnf (muffled, unfortunately) But all from this year are wonderful, particularly in Feb-May! Not even mentioning some of other people's favorites. With more listening I'd probably want to put bunches more on the list - it's kind of a "25 top five Stars" situation, there's just too much wonder to bear.... Notable mention for Most Unusual Star: http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-08-28.sbd.lepley.4234.sbeok.shnf - about an hour long with organ, but poorly mixed

it's not 69, but 9/2/68 is a great show with a nice high energy star to start things off.

2-28 is one of the best ever, with a particularly beautiful bit starting around 6 minutes in. Some people really go for 3-2, but I think the boys have a hard time finding themselves. Two great 1969-like Dark Stars are 12-7-68, which I was just listening to last night in the Charlie Miller upgrade version, and 9-19-70. I'm not sure there's a single substandard Dark Star in April 69. The Download Series #12 version from 4-17 is well worth buying.
