btw, there were some helpful holiday hints re: recovery in last Monday's (Nov. 26) Miss Manners and Dear Abby columns.

"Dear Miss Manners: We're in recovery from alcoholism, and do not drink. [at dinners + parties] I dread each time I'm offered a coctail.
...at small gatherings when people ask why we don't drink.

I'm not sure how to answer without giving too much personal information. We enjoy socializing with friends and want to do it without drawing attention to our non-drinking."

"Reader: Miss Manners recommends saying, "I don't care for any, thank you." Whether this is interpreted as meaning that you don't like the taste, or the effect, or are simply repeating declining drinks doesn't matter - because it closes the topic."

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dear Abby (Jeanne Phillips) writes about "How to keep holidays merry" to her readers.

>..."Remember, although alcohol appears to be a mood elevator, it is actually a depressant.
If you have a problem with alcohol, get whatever support you need to make it through the holidays.

If you are feeling down and in need of an instant upper, the surest way to accomplish it is to do something for someone else.
Call someone who lives alone and invite that person to dinner. Better yet say, I'm coming to get you and I'll see that you get safely home."

Love, ABBY
