> do we really want Phish on this thing Yes, some of us definitely and wholeheartedly do. How could you possibly not want them here??? Even if you don't like Phish, they quite obviously carry a ton of weight. When we approach other bands, we could let them know "Bands such as Phish have already joined the project." As Brewster points out, the only reason Phish said "no" in the first place is because they were already brainstorming their own way to do this. Great! If they opt to do this on their own, and ask us for $3 a show to download, there's about 25 I would shell out for in the first day (provided that they're the same quality as "Live Phish") I don't think they're grubbing for money. I think the situation is the same as that of the Motet - when they're ready to make these available for us, they want to be sure that it's the best quality you can get. Here's hoping we don't have to wait years... > all other jam bands have agreed to this project No, they haven't. Widespread Panic, moe., Disco Biscuits, Grateful Dead, Soulive, Charlie Hunter... They haven't said no yet, but at the same time they haven't agreed either. And let's not limit this project to "jam bands". I'd love to see some jazz on here, punk, classical, opera... Anything. -Brad

Forum: etree Subject: Phish is just TOO BIG for the site - AS IT IS NOW...

with 15+ years of material, the largest fan base, archive.org would basically turn into phish.archive.org pretty quickly i think.

so if they do opt into the archive.org project they sould maybe have their complete own server (etree04!) so that people trying to check out the new bands (that UNDERSTAND the power of this project and were smart enough to buy into the project right away) can download shows without having to fight for bandwidth with the massive amount of Phish fans.

i'm personally not a Phish fan but their fans are one of the pioneers of digital distribution of music on the internet. without these crafty people, etree may not even exist so there's absolutelty no question that they belong here.

but let's give some of these other bands that are trying to follow in their footsteps a chance.

it's a bit unfair that all the 'popular' lists at archive.org are basically dominated with DMB, SCI and KDTU shows already. i think it's pretty obvious to everyone they are popular.

let's see some other bands make these lists, it can really help gauge what new bands are making some noise out there that people are paying attention to, like Umphreys' McGee ;)

seriously tho, my first thought when i saw this project was that finally all these smaller bands that don't have the time, $$$ and resources to build something like this themselves, can now use archive.org to to their advantage.

i know that's a little off the scope of the archiving project, but not an undesired side effect either :)

so before archive.org turns into a full on Phish SHN repository-

Let's plan it out a bit and be ready for the tidal wave.

lots of great new bands adding policies and shows to the project almost daily. this project is really working and growing as it should and very fast.

and besides all that-
the teamumphreaks gang is trying like heck to take over the project anways ;)

so try and keep up with us as we're doing whatever it takes to get the word out there about Umphrey's McGee!

go see them and then came back and check the archive because the mission is to get good/clean SHN seeds of the shows up there ASAP.

it may take a show or two to 'get' them but that's not any different than most bands. you'll find the music quite addictiong after a listen or two and there's 50+ KILLER SBD/Matrix seeds on the archive now that you can pig out on :)

so dig in!

First off, I disagree with Phish being too big for this site, but rather than tire you with another rant, I'll just direct you to my comments above. Quoting skomp: it's a bit unfair that all the 'popular' lists at archive.org are basically dominated with DMB, SCI and KDTU shows already. i think it's pretty obvious to everyone they are popular. let's see some other bands make these lists, it can really help gauge what new bands are making some noise out there that people are paying attention to, like Umphreys' McGee ;) I hear your pain skomp, but the "popular" lists are just that - a measure of popularity, and they can't be any more fair than they are. The reason that the 9/8/2002 DMB shows up on top is because it has had the most directory views. (this is when someone clicks on the directory) It wasn't handpicked as #1. The only way to dethrone that show, is if you were to click on your Umph show 3,827 times to generate 3,827 more directory views. Rather, how about checking out the "Spotlight Show" or "Staff Picks" areas where, sure enough, there aren't any Dave, Cheese, or KDTU. That area doesn't depend on how many hits a show gets. And you never know, you may see another Umph show there in the future... :) -Brad

Forum: etree Subject: New measure of popularity

I've been working with a couple professors and we've come up with a new measure of popularity (called a batting average). While this won't replace the popular downloads list, it will provide users another way to find out about potentially interesting items in the Archive. Keep your eyes peeled - it's coming soon.

While Phish is really big, and would most likely require their own server, so would the dead and all subsequent side projects. And the dead have 30 years, so thas a little different. I think Phish should be here and in the forfront as thats what people would want, just like this could be called the DMB/SCI archive.

So how big is too big? The Grateful Dead have over 2000 shows on here. Most of the little sidebars (batting ave, this day in history, etc) seem to be dominated by the Dead most of the time.
