I'm a total Althea junkie. I listen to it at least once a day. Just looking for more suggestions.
My fav versions are in order:
7-13-81 McNichols Area
10-14-83 Hartford
8-28-81 Long Beach

For a good later era choice try 5/16/93 - Vegas. Vince can be a little over the top in this show but Garcia delivers a smoking performance. Really nice Garcia solos in Althea.

i like this one from deer creek 90 quite a bit. great show all around with killer versions of jack straw, desolation row, row jimmy, and playin' among others. but yeah, good althea...

i am althea connoisseur, i have listened to hundreds trying to find a consummate version, these are my findings

seriously in terms of jamming, no althea touches 3/23/87

these once are also strong:
Go To Nassau version
10/14/83 (DP 6, but a good aud is on the archive)
10/27/91

ones I just dig:
10/10/80
Without A Net Version - probably my favorite in terms of vocals

Here's my fav- the soundboard's a little trebly, but highly highly listenable. There's a great Uncle John's in this show too.

My favorite ALTHEA also happens to reside in one of the best, if not THE BEST sounding AUD's on this archive, and is part of an overall show I'd put in a top 15 all-time Dead show list any day.

Enjoy:

Nail on the head, my friend, nail on the Head. Also one of my favorites. The show is truly blistering and the quality is so good its scary. You've given me a good excuse to listen to it again. Not like I needed too much arm-twisting. Bonus Round: The Big River just before Althea is a raging beast of sonic mayhem. Bonus Round, Part 2: Just got through the Althea and it was everything I remembered it to be. Puts your head on the right track.
