Am I the only one who find the animations of book pages very annoying, I can't concentrate on reading the page.. ;-)

I agree I don't like the animated gift on the search/index pages either. Plus it takes the page longer to load. Where know a book is there - the pics are tooooo smallllll to be of any value anyway!

I find the animations very useful, it's a sort of quick snapshot of what is contained in the book - lots of pictures or not, the size of the text when comparing the same book in different editions. When I first started here I found it distracting but after a while learned to incorporate it into my visual scan and now would be very sorry if it was not there. Perhaps IA can have a user-level option to turn it off - this would be a good idea anyway as the animations are resource intensive for slower computers.

I don't think we are talking about the same GIF animations. I LIKE the animations on the individual page of the book I have clicked on from the search page. Then I can click to read it in text or download it as PDF file. I like the animations there so I can tell if there are pictures in the book I would miss if I only read it in text mode.

What I don't LIKE, is the itsy bitsy gifs on the search page or browse page - it's too small to see anything, and the fact that it blinks is very annoying and tiring of the eyes. What I have discovered is once the text starts to show and the first of the gif's start to load, if you are using Internet explorer, you can hit the red X under the favorites link - and it will stop loading those gifs and stop the animated blinking. Then you can read the browse/search page like regular.

With all the times this site has been shut down from bandwidth problems, you would think someone would be using their heads NOT to post animated gifts on browsing pages?

On the search page, along the right you can "turn off thumbnails" and it will stick as a preference for you.

In general, I hate repeating loops of animation anywhere on the net, so I use the extension Anidisable in Firefox, and set it to "once": http://www.siliconmethod.com/firefox/anidisable/

Pressing the [ESC]ape key will also stop the animations.
