I would feel so much better if you were 100% sure. You say this comes from a store bought DVD? The footage in the stock footage section is meant to be reedited into other videos and will spread quickly. I'm not a lawyer, but lets play pretend for a moment. Lets say Mr. Rick Prelinger buys an old film print of a old GE fridge ad. He looks it up and its within public domain. He pays to have it transfered to digital media and donates it for free public use. That is a great thing and I am happy for it. Now lets talk about mr. business man. He pays a lot of money to buy up a bunch of old films on Ebay. He pays more money to transfer it to video. More money to clean up the sound. Then he produces the DVD and puts a copyright on his new "digitally remixed version" of the video. He is a business man. He does not donate it for public use. I think that if you take his copy and release it to the public you stand a chance of getting into some trouble. I sure hope I'm wrong. (I am wrong a lot) |
