Good Morning -- perhaps the best GD show played in 1973. Amazing -- just several weeks after Pigpen's passing -- the Boys were fresh, brilliant, and buttoned-down. This show has great '73 energy, yet the Boys played with the flawlessness of the later '70s. Sure wish I had been there. Tapes are here.

best AUD on LMA for this show

Good Afternoon -- the best "live sound" I ever heard was the Grateful Dead, RFK Stadium, June 10, 1973. 8-hour show -- EPIC! 60,000 to 100,000 music lovers. Allman Bros and GD. I taped this show. It is the only complete AUD that has yet to surface. My AUD recording epitomizes the very best of the Grateful Dead "live sound" for the time. The Wall of Sound is nailed by the sound crew and the Dead for this show. Set within an outdoor Stadium, this close-up infield FOB spatially captures sound from the two Aux PA towers on the infield, behind the taper. The sound delay from the Wall of Sound to the Aux PA towers adds a touch of ear candy as it rolls around the stadium. This was by far the best sound fidelity experience I ever heard come out of a PA System, period. It was a sensational orgy of sound. At 5-feet and 8-inches tall, my arm was raised up the entire show. I was holding up my mic on the upper half of a standard mic stand shaft.

sweetest AUD you'll ever hear

Good Night -- the most exciting Set of 1973 I heard was on Jerry's birthday. July 31, 1973 -- after midnight. 2 words: MELT DOWN. I taped this show also. There is no SBD on the LMA or a few other places I checked. This AUD is perhaps the very best AUD of the many that Jerry Moore taped. Make sure to catch Phil's solo in one of the sickest versions of Truckin' the Boys ever played. The wall of sound was a bit tinny this night. I had goose-bumps for the entire 2nd set. A Hell's Angels security dude took my tape away from me at the end... and my friend Jimmy Watson went backstage and got it back! It was my birthday that night also -- literally and figuratively.

Thanks again Charlie Miller for your work.

Monte - thanks for the excellent choices and links. I've been in a 73 mood lately and these will fit the bill... just exactly perfect.

those are all HOT SHOWS -- they have been at the core of my 73 knowledge base for a long time -- but i love a reminder and am jealous of your stories -- did you know at the time that you were going to shows in a GOLDEN AGE for a group that would endure for another 20 years and prove to be an unparalleled AMERICAN TRIUMPH OF ART AND MUSIC CULTURE? the dead were smokin' right out of the gate in '73.... historically, i think the summer and fall tours contain many of the group's best regarded runs and LANDMARK PLAYING AND MUSICIANSHIP -- but MARCH '73 (and '81) seem to have been great LATE WINTER periods.... MARCH 1973 holds plenty of other riches for the intrepid to discover: Grateful Dead Live at The Spectrum on 1973-03-24 like much of '73, there is something for every taste at every showw -- what the hell, they played like every song every other day! CUMBERLAND, BOX OF RAIN openers, HCS and PLAYIN' in the first set. second unfolds sweetly with HE'GONE>TRUCKIN>SPANISH JAM>DARK STAR>SUNG ME BACK HOME>SUGAR being an absolutely EPIC JAM skip back a few days to the UTICA MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM for a two night stand to rival the RFK gigs of JUNE 9-10.... one night we get DARK STAR>EYES, the next night we get OTHER ONE>EYES..... who's complainin? head on to the last two shows of MARCH, another TWO NIGHTS in UPSTATE NY, at TWO DIFFERENT War Memorial Auditoriums!!!!! the show from the 31st features another [...]HOT JAM out of HE'S GONE>TRUCKIN, including a Spanish Jam, but here, coming out of OTHER ONE. OF COURSE, if we wanted to keep pushing we would run right into yet ANOTHER MONSTER 73 SHOW: Grateful Dead Live at Boston Garden on 1973-04-02 for the last show of the WINTER INTO SPRING TOUR, neither Dark Star or Other One or Truckin' or He's Gone is played -- but it is an outrageously good show. the boys would be off until May 13, and after 2 more may shows, they would rest two weeks before beginning the relatively limited summer tour, only 12 DATES PLAYED June - August. they returned fully charged and played some 39 plus shows throughout the AMAZING, NEVER ENDING FALL TOUR September 7 to December 19. CHEERS TO 73 MONTE -- we could write volumes on this year, no doubt!

He Live's -- "if I knew at the time" -- you're killing me while I'm killing myself. What I'd give to have even had the slightest clue "at the time." The stupidest thing comes to my mind. Here's 2 reviewers on the RFK Stadium shows - day 1, June 9, 1973 Saturday show:

Gozno_diaries says: "If it wasnt for Jerry flubbing the lyrics (or maybe it was some kinda malfunction) for like a whole minute, I would say this is once of the most well sung 1/2 steps out there. Garcias voice just...I dunno...sounds smooove in it."

nyge says: "Hey guy.... go sit in the corner for 10 minutes! I would give anything to hear Jerry 'fumble' anything. Bob was worst in truckin' and you know what? Everyone laughed. Even them...."

check out the Dick Latvala review I found for this show, posted in a review by Albix714... see attached jpg file
