Has to be in my top 5 (plus you want to stick around for the Franks...over 30 minute two song opener total, doesn't suck a whole lot)

Thanks for that one SDH thats some hot stuff!! I gotta check out the others but that ones gonna be hard to top!! Jerry sounds so frail not sickly like in later times but frail in a soulful way...dig it.

Try 4/1/88. One of the greatest first sets of the 80s and a ripping Half Step. Garcia is on fire!

was going to say don't bother - the top 19 Half Steps all come from 1977.

but since a few fellow forumites rec 4-1-88, I must step up and show my support.

certainly not a best ever version, but the 1/2 Step > Jack Straw is a lot of fun.

also, 8/24/72

no 77 type Garcia leads, but a near perfect rendition of the tune. seems every tune is played to perfection on 8/24/72.

not much for the 80s but I am taking your advice on 88-04-01 in my continual pursuit of seeing the light...

that is one fine mississippi half-step and the jack straw is sounding great as the follow-up...

one reviewer noted that it was like Jerry had never left the stage from the night before since he was sounding so go in mississippi half-step...something was up since he was on fire...

anyway, there is definitely a high-level of band energy for this show...I might just get into this 80s stuff after all...thanks!!!

swamprabbit, I have to say I listened to all of 88-04-01 and as you mentioned the first set is top shelf...I really enjoyed the listen.

so after an AM of 68-03-17 I now have the 88-04-01 deal on for another listen...

the 80s instrumentation is starting to work on me...

any other suggestions like this set?
