For 738 days Julia Butterfly Hill lived in the canopy of an ancient redwood tree, called Luna, to help make the world aware of the plight of ancient forests. Julia, with the great help of steelworkers and environmentalists, successfully negotiated to permanently protect the 1,000 year-old tree and a nearly three-acre buffer zone. Her two-year vigil informed the public that only 3% of the ancient redwood forests remain and that the Headwaters Forest Agreement, brokered by state and federal agencies and Pacific Lumber/Maxxam Corporation, will not adequately protect forests and species. Celebrity environmentalists including Joan Baez, Woody Harrelson, Starhawk and Mickey Hart rallied to help save Californian redwood forests. Mickey Hart and the drummers form a circle near Luna and continue weaving their rhythm songs. All eyes peer upwards. The main top of Luna had ben blasted away by lightning long ago, perhaps centuries ago, and a crown of big branches had grown outward, then upward from the top of the shattered trunk. Julia's platform is supported on these branches, 180 ft. above the ground.

Listen to Bobby, at 5:00 into Good Lovin'. This was at Olympic Center, Lake Placid, NY 1983-10-17. The band goes into an interlude, and builds on it, reminiscent of Lovelight. "I wanna tell ya all about it now... cause we gotta make it work some how. I don't have to tell you what it's like these days. Sometimes you can't see shit through the smoke and the haze. You gotta have good lovin'." It goes on and builds brilliantly from there. Think about it. The band is standing up for our environment, and mother Earth: sustainable life on Earth, for all of us. They take this theme into the crescendo of Good Lovin', the closing tune for the concert. And then, they come back out and do a tasty encore with "Revolution"... standing shoulder-to-shoulder with John Lennon, so to speak. The Grateful Dead should be in the "Hall of Fame" not just for their music and concerts, but also for all their activism and civic stewardship over the years. Some of us in Fort Collins gathered in Old Town Square -- in front of US Senator Ken Salazar's office -- on Weds, marking the 5th anniversory of the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq. I'm there in the middle of the pic.

I have her book, it's a pretty interesting read except the tree gets cut in the end. after she gets down and the logging company agrees to let the tree live someone sneaks in and cuts the tree anyway. I assume it was of the loggers that did it but they never say in the book. They gave that girl HELL, tried to knock her out of the tree with wind from heli props (and ended up getting fines for flight restrictions (flying too low) She wasn't even an ardent conservationist before stepping into the woods, just a girl looking for "something" said when she saw the trees she knew she had found "it", sound familiar? Thanks for the post man, I really appreciate what you've been adding!!!

Yeah I had the book for a long time before I read it, REALLY bummed me out at the end when some asshole killed the tree just out of spite. She was/is an amazing person, like I said she was never into any kind of activism or anything she was just looking for SOMETHING to do with her life. When she first decided to sit in that tree there was already others( I can't remember the organizations name) taking turns sitting in it and they weren't even going to let her cause no-one knew her, she finally was like "I don't care about you guy's and your rules I'm going in the tree like it or not". She ended up being the only one who saw the WHOLE ordeal through, very commendable. They cut ALL the trees around her trying to scare her out and she hung tough. Sad story indeed.
