Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Forum self-moderation revisited: Link Posting

Yet another message from a moderator in our continuing occasional series. This particular forum has been largely unmoderated, and it's been left to y'all to self-moderate in what you post, whether in your responses to trolls or in your posting links to other sites. In the last year or so, some of the link posting has gotten kinda sketchy. So here are a few rules of thumb: The Grateful Dead have a longstanding notice regarding online posting of music: http://userpages.umbc.edu/~hamilton/gdnotice.txt There's a part about its having to be noncommercial. An example of a strictly noncommercial site is bt.etree.org. Examples of commercial sites- displaying any kind of advertising- include mediafire and rapidshare. So your posting to and pointing to GD content at these commercial sites is not appropriate. Even if you're pointing to a noncommercial site, be aware that the GD PTB have been sensitive about links to material which they have already declared offlimits for sites like IA. If you see something they might have a problem with, don't post a link to it here. We know this is a unique site- and it's also uniquely prominent and visible. That's part of what made the GD PTB uncomfortable about this site's GD content in the first place. Related to that, let's keep the pointers to stream-only filesets here streamable (only). Next, a broader issue than GD links: If you see material that archive.org might have a problem hosting here itself, don't post a link to it here. In the LMA forum, as at etree.org, it's understood that people should post links to material from trade-friendly artists only, and in line with any policies the artists may have. Please carry that understanding into this forum as well. Don't post links to material that someone might have to worry about. That goes for direct links to rapidshare stuff, as well as for indirect links to blogs with rapidshare links (in other words, don't just game the links). For the clearly-OK stuff, if you know about something worthwhile, why not see about permission to post it here at archive.org? That would be cool. But if you feel that's not going to happen because of rights issues, then don't post the link. Various old links may be removed from the forum during ongoing cleanup. (BTW some old gdlive links that are now just SEO links for the bogus new domain owner may go away at the same time.) Please use good judgment in posting new ones. Thanks! -Diana Hamilton, volunteer curator

Some of us call them RAPID$HIT; because they'll actually shake you down for a premium users license which costs money. You can pay dirty $$$'s, for the privelege of downloading BOOTLEG copies of the entire GDM catalog with something called USENEXT. It can't be any more illegal; but the FBI has yet to go after this pirate's service.

"So if you see some GD clip (commercial or otherwise) at some video sharing site, you should be skeptical that it's actually legit."

There were a few shows broadcast on live TV and legally recorded by the viewers at home...

Yeah, I think I have one or two of those old VCR tapes in the basement somewhere. (Wasn't there one NYE with Franken & Davis?) :)

But then again, is Youtube even a noncommercial site?

Thank you, Diana. Makes perfect sense to me that we should abide by archive.org's wishes - we are after all guests here. If you were in someone else's home and they requested that you not smoke, you'd be a pretty selfish and inconsiderate person if you went ahead and lit up - and you'd be deservedly shown the door. Stick to the house rules, folks. If you don't like - go elsewhere. This site was not set up as a free for all.

Wait a minute...this isn't a free-for-all? Who, preTell, is the moderator?

I nominate...

I am a little thick, so I'll throw this question out. Are YouTube links, Grateful Dead or otherwise, acceptable? Or are these considered not appropriate?

A long time ago I asked about uploading vintage videos and movie clips featuring the Grateful Dead, and Diana Hamilton posted the band policy (similar or the same as what we're reading in the recent post that applies even to non-commercial links if the material - GD or non GD - being linked to is not allowed to upload onto Internet Archive.)

I presume that in order to enjoy what freedom the IA does have it must adhere without loopholes the artist rights to share in a non-competitive enviornment.

By now we should all know how to use search engines and locate links on our own, if not, try contacting someone privately via email.

Sharing's not over per se, but the days of being wide open won't fly with people who want to protect what they fairly consider their intellectual property.

The IA isn't a grey zone.

It's a library where someone watches the photo copiers pretty closely, or soon will be!

I don't know how Youtube moderates all their stuff since I don't go there much. But I can say that the Grateful Dead have pointedly *never* OK'd fan video taping and trading. So if you see some GD clip (commercial or otherwise) at some video sharing site, you should be skeptical that it's actually legit.

Thanks again for the help, and sorry for the jokes on a serious matter, but by now you have a vague idea of how we morons operate...

Thanks. I would crack wise, but it doesn't seem right, and frankly, I am a little scared of you...but in a good way.
