Word from staff is that ftp uploading works as before at its usual speed, but yes, ftp downloading has changed. Due to abuse, ftp downloads had to be throttled. Also, http makes it easier for IA to serve alternate copies of files in case of high load, individual machines crashing or other problems. FTP still does work, just manually change the "http" in a link to "ftp" and it should be usable, but slower than before. BTW FTP was apparently a stopgap while there was a 2GB http downloading glitch, now reportedly fixed (this? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298618 ). To use http, if your usual browser or net connection is giving you trouble, you may be able to find a suitable http-based download manager for your setup. I'd want one with resume, for instance!

Update: Firefox 3 has a resume feature on its downloading. I haven't properly "crash tested" it to see if it will resume even after really weird hangups, but I've seen it work a few times now after I closed the browser myself.

I use the Firefox 3 extension called DownThemAll

It's basically an HTTP download manager in FF, that can Resume an interrupted download. It's useful for Archive pages because you can right-click anywhere on the page and say "Down Them All", choose the file-type you're grabbing such as all the FLAC + the TXT file, make sure it has checked-off exactly the files you want, and tell it what folder to save in.

Thank-you for responding. I appreciate your kindness very much.

Perhaps the sometimes hit-and-miss nature of HTTP downloads is due to my location - all the way to the UK. HTTP downloads may be more reliable to your U.S. users.

Oh well, we'll keep trying. Thank-you again.

You can try using a download manager that allows you to resume
an interupted download.

Thanks! I will look into that.

Right now I'm using Firefox3 - which adds resumable downloads to its feature set. However FF3 might not support resuming from an interrupted download. I'll check Google for some other program if the d/l trouble returns.

Thanks again!

I often use the Orbit downloader.....downloads and/or grabs just about ANYTHING on the web, and resumes broken/interrupted downloads (the program creates temporary files which pick up where the interruption happened).
