The two most amazing FotM guitar solos I've heard are 4-23-77 and 10-16-77.

the best Scarlet>Fire combos, in chronological order are as follows: 05-08-1977, 10-02-1977, 07-07-1978, 10-10-1980, 10-19-1981, 05-23-1982, 06-18-1983, 04-20-1984, 12-28-1986, 07-08-1987, 03-31-1988, 07-07-1989, 03-22-1990, 09-04-1991, 06-22-1992, 10-01-1994, 05-26-1995

the best stand alone Fires are: 11-24-1978, 07-13-1985 and 05-27-1993

my personal favorites are 10-10-1980 and 05-27-1993...you can't go wrong with 03-22-1990 as it is on the So Many Roads box set...10-02-1977 features some sick wah licks in Fire...best segues into the Fire intro are 05-08, 10-10, 03-31-88 and 03-22-1990, perfect...

11-01-1979, 11-30-1980 and 10-14-1980 are often noted, but these versions are rambling and disjointed with some moments...

"...rambling and disjointed..."

You just described the Forum perfectly.

As for me, however, I have a different opinion on the 11/1/79, but that's just me. To each his own.

not that it's a "bad" version by any means, there was alot of hype with this version and to finally listen to it was kind of a let down...the segue intro into Fire, one of my favorite pieces of Dead music, is totally out of sync and fucked up, Garcia's appears to be fucking with his gear or something...the scarlet jam is interesting and fire has a few nice jam moments...it's is a similar version to 02-05-1978 in these regards...

A personal favorite is the Fire from Ventura '85. The show opens Sat Night > Fire and the Fire is slow, funky and drawn out, 13 minutes. Of course it was also kinda surreal because there was a huge brushfire on the hills outside the fairgrounds and you could see it behind the boys from the crowd, and if you listen carefully you can hear someone on stage commenting on it after the song is over. Check it out, you'll love it. http://www.archive.org/details/gd85-07-13.sbd.georges.372.sbefail.shnf

For an amazing stand alone Fire, get hold of the Benefit for World Music In Schools version on 2/15/87, Petaluma, CA.

Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Carlos Santana, Bobby Vega, Hamza El Din, with Baba Olatunji and his Drums of Passion. Just frickin out there. The African rhythyms laid over Fire just blow me away.

pretty decent AUD - but per notes: "- I did not record the drums at this concert... D'OH!"

It's always cool to listen to everything ever done, however the barton hall '77 scar/fire is etched in stone as the top.

Everyone knows that it's true, but we never want to run out of possibilities. There is a finite number of versions. In my humble opinion, it's okay that there is an absolute best. It's a good thing.

Barton is one of the tightest and at the same time least interesting S>F's I've ever heard. There's way too little exploration in the guitar work for my taste. It actually bores me. IMO, there are at least three or four better versions from that month alone.

6-18-83 was hot - transition and fire jams. Not the greatest ever, but one of the great ones few people mention. I also remember the Dew from that show blowing me away that night. Great Dew.
The show is underrated because no board has ever surfaced after all these years.

I'm currently into 4-2-87. It's probably one of the fastest but burning hot S-F's I've heard yet,if your in that kinda mood.

Hard to pick out a "best", but one I'm particularly fond of is 11/01/79. Brent's sound is still a little Casio-Happy, but Jerry's exceptional work more than makes up for it. 9/12/82 at the Greek is also fantastic. The transition jam is a real beauty.

11-30-80 is my favorite S>F. I like the Fire that follows Ollin Arrageed from the final night of the Egypt shows, flows out Ollin quite nicely. Can't wait to see what that looked like as it is on the DVD from the new release.

Answer always changes (they played the combo HOW many times?) but these days my answer lies here: 5/13/77 http://www.archive.org/details/gd77-05-13.sbd.miller.9393.sbeok.shnf The Scarlet is fantastic but the FIRE really is inspirational. This version gets overlooked (IMO) b/c there's such a short transition jam between S & F....but b/c of this, Jerry takes his time intro-ing Fire, especially on the wah-wah pedal and the result is a reggae-infused, bopping, rocking jamfest of FIRE. Can't say enough about this version. A recent pleasant discovery is 11/2/77...similar, but w/a longer transition jam. Not as good as 5/13 but an overlooked version as well that for some reason was left off the Dick's Picks version of the show. http://www.archive.org/details/gd1977-11-02.mtx.sirmick.86546.sbeok.flac16 Another FIRE I ALWAYS recommend is 9/25/81 http://www.archive.org/details/gd1981-09-25.sbd.miller.88822.sbeok.flac16 from Lehigh Univ. You must forgive Jerry the mucking up of lyrics in the first verse, but if you can get by that, you're looking at one of the most powerful FIRE's ever played. The jams he pulls out in between verses are blazing and they stick the landing hard back into the Scarlet Coda. Brent and the drummers excell on this FIRE as well. Give these 3 Fires a try. You won't be disappointed.
