September 7 the first appearance of recorded Grateful Dead music on this Day in History comes in 1969 -- a jam at the Great Highway with the Airplane: 9/7/69, "The Family Dog at the Great Highway " this is a really wild show. reportedly the musicians were pretty much wasted.... and it was a frat-house atmosphere -- so we have a big sloppy jam session to contend with -- you know where you're at when after the decent blues number "baby what you want me to do" Jerry asks, no one in particular, "what do you want us to do".... someone screams out "WIPEOUT" and..... THEY PLAY IT! yeah, it's like that -- it's like this too, Wipeout eventually turns into the FIRST EVER BIG RR BLUES! -- huh? well, over the remainder of wipeout, jerry smoothly plugs in a verse of BIG RR -- weird and wild -- it all just devolves from there as some unknown drunk gets on stage for LOUIE LOUIE, this is followed by Twist & Shout and Blue Moon -- what can you say, it was a long hot summer.... i couldn't find any photos of the building where these Family Dog shows took place -- but apparently, it was at Ocean Beach near the famous Cliff House: Photobucket the next appearance on 9/7 came in 1973, at the beginning of the september run that would contain a stretch of 8 shows WITH HORNS -- but no horns at the 2 NASSAU COLISEUM dates, 9/7 & 9/8: Photobucket not my favorite show of the year but it has all the elements that make for YET ANOTHER super-duper '73 blowout: generous sets and song selection and the high level of energy and desire by the band to probe deep on nearly every tune -- they take chances on many of the songs -- the first set has a sweet Bird Song and a long and thick Playing Jam -- with Jerry playing the role of HUMMING BIRD as he floats effortlessly in mid air, darting from one theme to another, bouncing off of Phil's contrapuntal bass lines and Billy's relentless ride -- ANOTHER TORRENT of musical ideas pours forth -- and with BIRDSONG and PLAYING combining for 30 plus minutes of music -- this was just SET 1! there was plenty more to come....... a solid HCS gets the ball rolling in the second followed by a decent Uncle, the first stand alone Let It Grow which is JUST COOKING by the end, when Jerry makes a nice turn into Stella Blue, and offers up a sweet vocal.... but WAIT, it's not over yet.... there was still an hour plus of music to be heard as the band would play another TRUE 73 MIND-MELTER, a serious JAM indeed: the TRUCKIN>OTHER ONE jam>EYES OF THE WORLD>SUGAR MAGNOLIA sequence is not to be missed..... here's more on this show from a "BLOGGER": (oh, and thanks for the photo, man): http://deadlistening.blogspot.com/2008/02/1973-september-7-nassau-coliseum.html it would be 10 years before they would land on SEPTEMBER 7 again.... but i alluded to that Gem of a run, a few days ago, so i am gonna leave it.... THERE

why are your posts so negative and have nothing to do with the music?

Seriously, thanks, yet again. I often bookmark some of the things you've posted for revisiting and grabbing the pics as well as the tunes. Always appreciated.

I don't have 09-07 so I listened to 09-06 at the same family dog on the great highway...

speaking of ocean beach and the cliff house look at this cool thing an artist did last friday at ocean beach:

I would have liked to have seen that...

(not the best version of the original but the 1902 pic is really something to see with the wild west show lining the beach and the cliff house in the distance)

since I am into family dog and 69, time to throw-on 11-02 and listen to its amazing dark star one more time...

I hate when that happens...I will blame it on the newspaper in name only...

I think Family Dog was down the hill on the left just before the 1st street, Balboa. There's just an empty lot there now.

Isn't the Great Highway is like the 49th bye-bye?

the 49th bye-bye is right and that sounds like the spot of the family dog...

one cool thing, if you drive on it today there is still one or two houses that have dead flags flying high, along with one huge skull banner in a front window of a house...it is a fine sight to see to say the very least...always brings a smile to my face...

btw: one of the first times I was in the beach chalet, which is on that strip, was during a period of major shark sightings...what started as a discussion and with one person showing me a shark bite ended up with like ten people saying: "well look at this..."..."no, look at this..."...I just remember being surrounded by people with either their shirts up, their pants down, or their legs/arms laying out on the bar all with very ugly looking bites...one strange scene...
