Re: Non-English collection tidying |
Relevant to the issues highlighted in a recent thread:
http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=211172
Now that there is a lot of material in one place, it's apparent that a fair portion of the subcollection is labeled *very* poorly. In some cases, unidentified material has been in the Archive since 2005-6, but patrons have recontributed the same content in 2007-8, perhaps due to their confusion over what is already available.
For any library, the data *about* an item can be as important as the item itself. Unlabeled content does not do much good for a library in the long term. The more time that passes, the less useful unidentified content becomes to a library.
Thus, some additional tidying of the collection may occur over time, so that items with better contributor-added metadata will become more apparent in the mix. Poorly described uploads are less likely than well-described uploads to be retained long term.
Update, FYI to any interested uploaders:
Fake metadata does not count as
good metadata. :P
