Say what you will about the 5/6 Kresge show, and admittedly, it's a good one, in fact, a favourite of mine from a month with its share of fantastic shows. However, next day's show at Dupont Gym most definitely deserves its own sort of accolades. And yeah, it's an AUD sourced show, and of an age that will reveal all the usual audio artifacts common in such a source (mic issues, dropouts, mix-issues, etc). But even still, i love it. And you should too.
The show starts out with a pretty interesting acoustic set, a rendition of 'Don't Ease Me In' that is actually fun to listen to, and not the groaner it would become in later years. Followed by a fantastic, laid-back 'Rider', not as emotionally driven as the Alfred College version a week earlier, but worthy nonetheless.
The rest of the set follows according to the acoustic sets from the period. Very little to disappoint and a whole lot to feel groovy about.
Pig, the showman, the bluesman, the soul of the band, finally finds his way to the stage after the NRPS set for the electric set, leading off with a ripping 'Good Lovin' typical for the era. I actually prefer '71 & '72 versions, but these '70 versions do quite well, and admittedly have a greater fierceness to them, thank you very much.
Perfunctory versions of 'CR&S' & 'Dire Wolf' follow, then it's Pig again, with his harp on, for a decent sounding 'Easy Wind', nicely performed. The 'High Time' is perfect, disturbed only by some chattering dummies in the crowd.
And since i truly love a ripping 'That's It For The Other One', more so if it has 1969 or 1970 in the signature, following the 'Good Lovin'' & 'Lovelight', this is the highlight of the electric set for me; yes, the sound is a tad muffled, but at least you can distinguish between the instruments, and right around 10'55 in, and again at 12'18 (and around 18'00), Jerry unleashes; Phil is, of course, his usual bad self as he lays back and destroys his instrument; just lovely.
Did i say i'm a huge fan of 'King Bee'? Well, i am. My favourite versions are actually those from 1966 & 1967 (7/1/66, 11/19/66 & 2/12/67), and so this late era version doesn't exactly make me feel all dirty and mean. And to be honest, it's not a very inspiring version, and yet, it's Pigpen, so i'm at least partially satisfied.
'NFA', followed by a fantastic 'Lovelight', round out the show. And not just any 'Lovelight', but a 32 minute work of beauty, my second favourite for the year, bested only by the version two weeks later on 5/24, my all-time fave. Eat your heart out direwolf.
And there you have it. A lovely audience recording, the way music truly should be appreciated, not via the sterile offerings of some lifeless soundboard. Get it here now:

Well, impressive little post...now, the one thing that caught my attention is that Jerry says "sing along" to another Dire Wolf I have, though can't recall the exact date...think it is May-June of 70...but not this one.

Damn, this is really bugging me...the DWolf I am thinking of was one in which the intro is bouncing along, longer than usual as if someone is doing something and they are waiting to start singing, if you follow, and Jerry chimes in with the sing along part...
It was in my "car rotation" but now can't figure it out as I don't keep the setlists easily visible for shows, but was sure it was during the summer of 70 as it was semi acoustic I think...
Crap, could be all wet on this, but let me know if you run across one like that...

LiA--hey, man, thanks for the efforts with this. It was one of those things that got in my head for about 24hrs, but has passed now. Will find it one of these days "by accident" and be sure to let you know (as utterly trivial as it is!).
You are right that this one is very similar, but he actually says something like "you know, this is an easy song to sing along to..." something slightly different than on this one. So, now it is ENTIRELY me trying to find the one that I was listening to even though he clearly does this, more or less, multiple times, as you pointed out.
Were you here a few yrs ago when ducats or sags or somebody had me stepping and fetching trying to find the Midnight Hr when Pig says to Jerry "There you go...play your guitar"? I knew it was on the 9/16/66 show that the albums cover (Vintage et al) but we were going back and forth, and finding versions in which he says "That's it...play your guitar" (and him telling me that was NOT the one he wanted, etc., etc.).
Same story here I suppose!

Hey Cliff--that is VERY much the style of the one I am thinking of with the clapping, bouncy feel to it, and prolonged intro, but Jerry doesn't call out on this one--I was sure he was going to!

A fine review of a fine show!
I think 5/2 Harpur is the shining star of that month, but 5/6 and 5/7 are also fun to hear.
As for Garcia asking the audience to sing along with Dire Wolf - he did do that on 12/31/69, and actually at quite a number of other shows, including 10/26/69, 11/1/69, and 12/5/69, among others.
On 10/26/69 he also dedicates it to the Zodiac killer and "paranoid fantasies everywhere". On 11/1/69 he says the song's about "what you do when the wolf's at your door". This is actually probably the longest version - after singing it through once, Garcia just keeps playing, tells the audience "It's an easy song, you can all sing along really easy," and sings the whole thing again.

thanks LIA, i too think Harpur the highlight of the month, might have to pull that one out since i haven't listened to it in quite some time
as for the Dire Wolf WT is referring to, i'll scout around and see what i come up with; fortunately, it's always easy to narrow down the years the Prime Minister listens to on a regular basis

Great review of a wonderful show! I wrote in my notes that this would be ranked on the same level, or nearly the same level as 5/2/70, the Harpur show if the boards existed. I don't think the show is in the vault though. In volume 1 of The Deadheads Taping Compendium there is a photo of the vault and the 1970 reels. After 5/2/70 there are no reels until 5/14/70. The only reason 5/6/70 exists is that it was taped by the students. Especially sad (to me at least), is that the 5/10/70 show is gone. That was a concert in Atlanta I have heard about from someone I knew years ago in the 70's who attended it. The Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead reunited at this show and played separately as well as together. Even at the time it was considered legendary. I strongly suspect that many of these reels were "borrowed" by people in the Dead's extended family and never returned.
