What are some funny/memorable banters during a show? Where the band is talking to the crowd?

Some of my favorites are:

1974-08-06 - Roosevelt, NY (DP #31)
After Eyes Bobby says "Don't hang off the fence, idiot!"

1985-06-27 - Saratoga, NY
Phil and Bobby say "Don't hang off the balcony!"

1970-09-19 - Fillmore East
Pigpen says "Go home and fuck somebody"

any others?

this one's easy...

Taft Auditorium, Cincinnati - Oct 30, 1971

an apparently small venue, so crowd voices echo around the hall. it's keith's first show (?). phil introduces him after Loser. It's also being broadcast on radio, making all the banter a little funnier...

Jerry starts getting annoyed at the crowd after Playin'

"Alright, alright... You don't have to scream at us."

Introducing Ramble on Rose, Jerry says, "This is one we laughingly call Rambling Rose," followed by a "Ha ha ha ha" from Bob. Then the sh!t hits the fan.

A, shall we assume chemically-altered, fan is audibly screaming, 'Play Truckin'' over and over. "Why won't you play it?' he asks.

"We don't know it," someone says. After which Jerry says, "Eat it. Eat it man, eat it."

He doesn't stop, prompting this from Jerry:

"Come on man, come on man. You gotta be cop? Is that it? 'Play Truckin'. Play Truckin''... We'll play whatever we like."

[Applause]

Jerry continues: "'Course, that's not saying you won't like it. You might like it too. It might be alright. It might be something perfectly o-kay."

"What about all those people that may not like Truckin'?" Jerry continues.

[Pause]

"Well, how 'bout it man?"

Then, from the audience (or the band maybe): Why don't YOU play Truckin'?"

Then Phil injects some needed levity: "We realize we're wasting valuable time folks, but it's really okay, in the long run."

Then a classic Bobby moment... "You folks sitting right up there in the lip of the balcony [stutters] might want to watch out, cause any minute now they're going to be dropping a whole load of live chickens on you."

Sugar Mag ensues. After which the 'Truckin' calls continue.

Phil: "Alright this one's for you. This is the one you've been waiting to hear."

[crowd]

Jerry: "Yeah, we know man. We know. We hear you."

Bob: "We're gonna pause for about 3 or 4 seconds and scratch our asses and think it over."

[sounds of scratching on strings]

Then.. a blistering Truckin!!

Same show - at end of Casey right before Mexicali - as Bob tunes up "If your ever dodging bullets in Mexico you know you'll want to be in tune for the occasion"

Lot's of good banter in this show.

That's the show that's from? This sequence was filler at the tailend of a Lyceum tape from '72 that I had years ago & I always wondered what show it was from---incredibly funny shit!

check out the first sets of both the Oxford Me shows in 1988. Almost sounds like they are pre-planned bits with all the dialogue addressed to the audience

You may be pleased to know there seem to be brand new matrices of these two shows:

There's also a Charlie Miller board of 07/02 - new to me.

5/15/70. The acoustic sets are loaded with fantastic banter! Some of the best examples: "Shut up! I didn't ask you about your beard" -Jerry (sometime in the early show acoustic set) "Your mother eats peanut brittle soup!" -Pigpen (after Easy Wind) "Down by the River!" -Audience Member "No man, White Rabbit." -Jerry Something to the effect of: "Don't I get to play one before you bums play that f****n s**t!?" -Pigpen (after late show Candyman) (not talking to the crowd but rather the band, responding to Bob and Jerry's announcement that they're going to close the set "right proper" with a gospel tune) http://www.archive.org/details/gd_nrps70-05-15.sbd.reynolds-kaplan.29473.shnf Enjoy!

Not exactly banter, but this one fits in with the earlier thread on encores: on 4-17-1982, Bobby introduces my favorite version of my favorite encore by gesturing to the rear of stage and saying:

"This ones for you folks up back there who have been watching the backs of our heads all night."

The encore: "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue."

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the absolute funniest banter from 12/28/69!

Prior to the bare wires version of H2H, Pig almost starts a riot by suggesting the crowd move closer.

But even after one of the towers at this blistering hot speedway gig comes down, some dudes are still climbing, forcing an abrupt halt to what will turn out to be the most incendiary Mason's Children the Dead ever played!

With time constraints, Jer just wants to play, but Pig has other ideas...

Many favorites, but this one stands out from the 11/8/70 acoustic set in Port Chester: Weir: ."Of course you all realize we're all missing Godzilla vs King Kong on TV...Hey, it's real good man, we saw the opening scenes it's real good. Garcia in background: "Godzilla; he's a mean motherf*cker!" Garcia: "He's a mean motherf*cker...however later on we're missing "The 39 Steps" Weir: "Its a remake though man.." Garcia: It is? Oh bummer.." Weir "So you're not missin' nothing later on. but right now you're missing King Kong vs Godzilla and I hope to tell ya... I didn't get to see King Kong, but Godzilla, (Garcia in background: "He's a mean motherf*cker") he was one motherf*cker. He spit fire, radioactive fire, and blows things up.." And then begins the intro to Rosalie McFall.. http://www.archive.org/details/gd1970-11-08.aud.weiner.28609.sbeok.shnf

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the banter from 5/5/67! Funny stuff, listening to the band stall the audience while stoned out of their skulls.

Oh and the Golden Road that follows doesn't suck too much either.

Cannot remember what show this was from.....I think sometime in '71:

Bobby: "What do you get when you cross and Octopus with a Pig?"

*Many shouts of what from the audience*

Bobby: "Ok...here's what you get when you cross an Octopus with a Pig......you get a Football that throws itself!"

Hmmmm.....guess you had to be there?! LOL

11/6/71 - At the end of Tennessee Jed you can hear Phil -

"Yawp, yawp, yup, yup..." as if his monitor died

then as the track shifts to the opening of El Paso he states

"These monitors don't work for shit - I'm here to tell ya."

Not in and of itself memorable, I just happened to be listening to 11/6/71 as I was reading the thread...........

Not by a band member, but Ken Babbs' memorable preface to the Baby Blue encore on 5/31/69 at McArthur Court certainly deserves a listen. http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-05-31.sbd.oleynick.76.sbeok.shnf And since I've already broken the rule once, why not do it again? It almost goes without saying that Ken Kesey's eulogy for Bill Graham during the 10/31/91 Dark Star is one of the standout "banter" moments in the band's history. http://www.archive.org/details/gd91-10-31.sbd.gardner.2897.sbeok.shnf

Springfield CC around 1980, We go in early and Phil comes out early, and we start going back and forth with him. Finally having enough of our chemically induced humor, he bids us adieu by dropping trou.

This is more directed at Bear and the sound crew than the audience, but I love how it leads into one killer Dew: Jerry: Awful! Just plumb awful... Pig: It stinks, Bear! Fix it up! Bobby:Yeah, yeah, yeah, It couldn't be worse, it couldn't be worse...a little more bass frequencies in the monitor so we have something to hang on to... Jerry: Do you mind? Pig: Hang on to what? Bobby: You'll see. Pig (Phil?): Ready to go? Jerry: Sure, yeah...that's nice, very nice... etc. This is all overlapping, and the crashing cymbals of Dew come in while they're still talking, so my transcription may be off. Hear for yourselves, or your various selves... http://www.archive.org/details/gd1969-05-23.sbd.phunk1.74.sbefail.shnf

Another good one at Bear's expense on 7/14/70:

Phil: Hey it's ringing at two-hundred fifty cycles Bear, and it's also ringing at about two-thousand cycles. You got that?
Jerry, (to Bear) "Don't mutter man, don't mutter."
Phil (to Bear) I can't hear you, what are you saying?"
Bear: "Well, I've got a vague whatever."
Jerry (to the audience) That's it! "A vague whatever! Did you hear that?"
Bobby: "How can ya hate a guy like that?"

There's a Boston Music hall show from the early 70's where Phil has some kind of paranoid meltdown and identifies an audience member as a narc. They shine spots on the guy and everything. Anyone remember this one? It might be even be a Dick's Pick ...

It seems like Phil was always pissed off and often very vocal about it in 1971-72

Soundboards from 1982 have a lot of audible stage banter and the band is in good spirits. There's the discussion before Cassidy on 4-19-82 about Bob remembering the new change. Also, the show on 5-21-82 had a nice conversation about the 2nd set set list which I believe Phil says "Playin', Uncle Johns, Fuck Off"
There's another show in '82 where they mention something about "some fat chick"...cant remember which show that is.

There's been plenty of shows where you can here them talking stuff over on stage. Not always highly audible, but if you bend your ear enough you can make out what's going on.... 2 favorites: 10-17-78 at the beginning of space some gal is asking Jerry for banjo lessons, as he explains he doesn't teach anymore Bobby says something about being arrested. http://www.archive.org/details/gd1978-10-17.sbd.unknown.32906.sbeok.shnf 12-27-86 - Before the encore Billy says to Weir - "How about we do Playin in the Band again, 4 or 5 more times. http://www.archive.org/details/gd1986-12-27.sbd.miller.77443.flac16 These are the only 2 that come to mind right off... Saratoga 85 as well was memorable.

Right before Samson...paraphrasing here but this is the gist:

Bob: "Mickey wants me to inform y'all...I don't really understand it...but he says, the first rule,...the first law of rock and roll is 'drummers do not make house calls.'...(pause from confused audience)....I don't get it, either."
