There are some really special jams from '72. By "jam" I think of a piece of music that is in and of itself a new creation, and likely to never be re-created. We had a discussion here recently about this very thing, and the example brought up was a little jam out of Caution on the Rockin' The Rhine bonus disc recorded at the Academy Of Music run in March.'72. It is just a small passage, but it really has an unearthly beauty to it in the same way that the "Beautiful Jam" from 2/18/71 Port Chester had. I also named another one from the Europe "72 tour similar in nature that was created on the fly out of The Other One on the 4/21/72 Beat Club show that was done for TV. The only reason that jam was cut short is when Jerry notices "the tapes running out!" and they close it down. The term "jam" can go two ways. It can be merely a long variation on a theme like in the 40, 50 minute Dark Stars or a unique piece of music that is entirely new, created in the moment and unique to that one performance. I would love to hear other examples where the guys created something out of thin air. I was recently playing a show just like that, not from '72 but from the 4/15/70 Winterland show. After Cryptical>Drums the band finds itself suddenly thrown into this wild Afro-Cuban type jam that sounds like Santana, with pounding drums and Jerry riffing over the drums before settling back into the "traditional" drum intro to The Other One. Never heard that again. Check it out (and sorry for the hijack!) http://www.archive.org/details/gd70-04-15.sbd.kaplan.14354.sbeok.shnf
