As I understand it, Freecache is an experimental service, and it's staffed largely by volunteers right now. So that's why nobody is necessarily around to help answer questions on it, unlike, say, the audio and video collections.

[I think the plan is to clearly indicate which of the Archive's services are 'experimental', and which are actually supported, at some point.]

Anyhow, I'm not sure if Freecache is down permanently, unfortunately, because I don't deal with the service, but hopefully, one of the people who does can come along and tell you what's going on.

Freecache is shelved for now. We have not installed the right redirects, but yes, it is being shelved.

We did not have a good proposition or mature enough tool to attract other freecache sites.

The Coral system, using the planetlab system, does have a critical mass. I talked with the leader of that project and hopefully they will be supporting large files better.

Therefore, I hope to see the ideas move forward, and we may join back in if we think we can take an solid next step.

I have asked the sysadmins to put in a coral redirect (as long as this is ok with the coral folks) or just refer the urls back to the original locations.

the coral guys are up for the redirect, so prepending
freecache.org on a URL should work again.

The also changed how they handle files larger than 50MB by just redirecting back to the original source.

so we have a system that will work again, and we can move this experiment forward!

the whole point was to cache large files and save the original host, coral seems to be better for html and smaller files.

anyways, freecache was great while it was around and hopefully coral will continue and improve.

also freecache.org is going to archive.org, i thought this would be redirected properly? or even to the freecache page on archive.org?

CoBlitz service in PlanetLab (CoDeeN) now do the similar thing as FreeCache did in the past - they cache large files of unlimited size. Distinctly, they distribute every file to many nodes and collect them "on-the-fly" for every downloader. The only limits are: not allowed illegal movie/music/warez.
To use it, just add prefix http://coblitz.codeen.org:3125/ to any URL, and everybody will be able to download it by usual Web Browser without any additional software.

thanks, i'll have to remember that.

i think there was a small window between freecache and other file hosting sites like rapidshare.de and megaupload.com . luckily its now easier to find such hosts.
