The name "Ogg" comes from a recurring character in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, a very entertaining and deservedly popular british humorous fantasy series. The irrepressible "Nanny" Ogg is the wild party witch, a much-married earth-mother who can drink barbarian heroes under the table, while singing songs such as "The Wizard's Staff has a Knob on the End" and "The Hedgehog Cannot Be Buggered At All", accompanying herself on banjo (or anything vaguely banjo-like that she can find nearby).
What's not to like? :)
Futhermore (or should that be furthurmore?), the ogg format is the first and (so far) only truly free, libre, open source lossy audio format. It's software of the people, by the people and for the people. I mean, seriously, no big corporate drones would ever name their software after a character from british comedy. It takes the open source movement to give us the (Monty) Python programming language and the (Nanny) Ogg audio format. Even if you don't use any open source software yourself, you have to admire and respect that. Doncha? |
