Wall of Sound wasn't till early '74, right? So this recording was pre-WoS. Unless they were testing some kind of prototype on this date.

I got to hear the "Wall Of Sound" in Atlanta in 1974. It seemed that no matter where you stood the sound was loud and CLEAN! Pictures don't do it justice, it looked and sounded amazing! When the band finally parted out "The Wall" I believe about five or six other bands including the Stones and the Allmans ended up with a piece of it. I didn't see the band in '73 but I understand the "Wall" was introduced that year with all the high stacks behind the band. The center cluster array completed the system in 1974. Vocals sucked and sounded "reedy" because of the microphones used. That was the only weak spot in the sound. Wall Of Sound 1973 November 30,1973. Hi SkyDog,
I was wondering if you wouldn't mind adding my copyright to my image of the Wall of Sound you have posted? It's cool that you use it as long as I get photo credit.

We're both right:

Though the initial framework and a rudimentary form of the system was unveiled at Stanford University's Roscoe Maples Pavilion on February 9, 1973 (ominously, every tweeter blew as the band began their first number), the Grateful Dead did not begin to tour with the full system until a year later. The completed Wall of Sound made its public debut on March 23, 1974, at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California. A recording of the performance was released in 2002 as Dick's Picks Volume 24.

The rising cost of fuel and personnel, as well as friction among many of the newer crew members and associated hangers-on, contributed to the band's October 1974 "retirement." The Wall of Sound was disassembled, and when the Dead began touring again in 1976, it was with a more logistically practical sound system.

I agree with you - even a "rudimentary" version of the wall of sound was powerful enough to generate beautiful AUD recordings.
