And watch out in case Opera does an update, it seems something major is being fixed on the WWWW considering all the updates coming thru to me from Microsoft

3.013 broke firefox on my win XP Box. This is a hacked xp in which I deleted IE, messenger and most of the crap microsoft uses to integrate its office apps with the OS. actually this XP version which I hacked with a program called nlite:

http://www.nliteos.com/index.html

Is only running 15 processes in the backgroud versus 45-60 for normally XP professional. It runs as fast as linux or BSD and is many magnitudes more secure. I created them for my office (already have legal licenses so it is not a copyright violation since they are our copies). None of my machines have succumbed to the usual microshit registry OS slowdowns.

I noticed the Archive was down for several hours, its up and running now. My new scanner is really saving me hours of time. HP 5590 with duplex ADF. Put 50 pages on and it runs unattended like a charm. This works well for the majority of my stuff since it is almost exclusively 81/2" by 11" or a5 size. (technical manuals).

I wish that they would KISS, but I guess it is to much to ask that intelligent people create optimally simple projects.

Best wishes,

Gerry

Some people think an expression of their intelligence is by how complicated they can make things, and still understand how the thing works. They like their names up in lights, for their ideas.

Super intelligence people are those who use their intelligence to write KISS applications, and then prefer staying in their back rooms, using their KISS application tools to do useful work

I am not affected (yet?) but if anybody is stuck, last year our local city council got something wrong, and I could not access them on my new Firefox 3.

So, I downloaded portable Firefox 2 onto a USB pen drive, and ran that Firefox 2 off the pen drive as needed.

The only thing to watch, is you can not run both at the same time, so maybe another brand of browser on your HDD, and Portable FF on a pen drive.

I suspect it can be run of a CD too now.

Hey Gerry

That pen drive idea, might just restore use of the old up loader we all liked, and had taken away from us, against our wishes, by somebody superior to us, who decided what we wanted, without the politeness of checking with us first.

Peter,

Opera is probably a better choice because it can be hacked down to a lite version just like XP with nlite.

I hear what you say Gerry, but I have lots of interests, and my PC is more a Vista machine running XP I just finished sorted outing out a mate using Evolution email app, the coding it used was not recommended by the email standards setter, Yahoo saw everything from him as spam, even if it was a reply to a message from him, it was just my system that made the odd coding visible, yet he blamed the issue on me. You know I am using aerial photos, I just got PD access to the latest batch of photos, for that, I get them as TIFF or a format new to me, this new format is apparently what the map makers used, so I am breaking in new software over the next few days. But Gerry, I agreed, every new protocol, new format, new Flash, new whatever, is driving me nuts, yet I have to remain compatible with as much as I can. The WWW should be more like Mac computers, but if it was, very likely we would have lots less KISS tools and be lacking choice. Peter, I have been awake 20-hours, was supposed to be an early night. BTW, are you using the old up loader again with Opera, if so, I would run Opera only when I am uploading to the archive, ARE you using the old up loader again?

My update to 13 failed, I had a browser crash 10 minutes after the restart, but even after the restart I was still on 12., it is possible I saw the update to the following. I am not sure just yet if I am going to try it. Gerry what do you think? (got some info for your other question on the share button, 10-minutes before I post that, going to do it now) Super Speed new Fasten your seatbelt: Firefox 3.5 includes the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, which gives the browser dramatically better performance than ever before. Firefox has always been fast, but this is the fastest Firefox ever (more than twice as fast as Firefox 3, and ten times as fast as Firefox 2), meaning Web applications like email, photo sites, online word processors and more will feel snappier and more responsive.

peter,

I use kmeleon, which is a fork of firefox and is much faster and has less crap to deal with. You can install speed up macros which make it even faster or tinker with the config file yourself. Firefox while being much better than IE is still to bloated for my taste. I like my life simpler, one of my automobiles is a 1974 plymouth Valient and the other a 1969 Chevrolet Pickup; the newrer car is a 1992 chevrolet cavalier which I stripped out most of the autmated stuff including the air conditioner. I would much rather add what I need than to deal with the crap that I will never use. For my customers, if they want those bells and whistles and the slow performance which goes with them, I give them what they want.

Where kmeleon?

I agree re cars, so much crap under the the bonnets, how do I get at spark plugs for example, the heart of the car.

My example is a 1930s Austin 7 or 10.

basic 4 cylinder engine, transmission, wheels, 4 seats and a body, steering wheel, gear stick, go stop and clutch pedal.

And everything so simple, if it broke, 5 minutes and $2 to fix.

But ONLY a small gas/petrol tank. Who cared, it went to the moon on one tank fill.

Good night, this night, its an early night

Peter
