Thanks, DHM! Just love those shots! Excellent...

Keep 'em coming--you, LiA dali & dham are outstanding contributors here with your singular, often "non-verbal" input.

Me, I stick to the incessant, irritating, and over-written drivel input channel...smoking jacket is lit!

does Bear say, "look Jer, never mind what Forest Gump says, okay? And forget about sounding like Gomer Pyle, man. Chet Atkins, Jer... he's your cowboy guitarist whose influence you might consider. At least think about it, man."

here's a better conversation
Summer of Love, 1967 - PBS documentary

Joel Selvin: "The music changed just immediately. I cannot explain to you what it's like to be in a crowd of 5,000 people on LSD with the Grateful Dead, also on LSD, leading the crowd through a series of improvisations. Before that, rock and roll songs were three minutes, period, paragraph, we're out of here." Peter Coyote: "It was such an exciting, heady time to find out that under the official reality there was this seething turmoil of young people, learning new music, new thoughts, new ideas, new literature, new poetry, new ways of being." Narrator: "This 'turmoil of young people' was, in part, due to sheer numbers. Never before had so many Americans been under 25. There were over 90 million of them, nearly half the population. And many were disillusioned with the world around them. The president many had found inspiring had been assassinated barely three years earlier. War in Vietnam was killing a hundred American soldiers every week. Month after month dozens of young men were being drafted into the army. And the struggle for civil rights at home had grown increasingly militant.." "They were derided by some as junior grade hipsters, "hippies" for short. Many began experimenting with communal living in the large Victorian houses of the Haight, and visions of a utopian society began taking shape, enhanced by a mind-altering new drug called LSD, or acid."

Well, here we were low on kiddies...about 20 groups all told. Love seeing the locals, of which there were maybe 6 groups, since we sometimes don't know our neighbors from just 10 doors down as we might like to...but, the groups of "non-locals" that get bused in (large families--needy? overweight? how's that work?--or bunch of HS kids) were at least relatively polite, and nobody trashed my beloved front yard with all my personally planted and attended desert plants (which really makes me get out the baseball bat and look threatening while sitting in the desert moonlight...they just don't know I can't stand up and chase them).

So, a mixed bag...

Thanks for the news William Tell ! I went to Grateful Dead Halloween in the Bay Area but I don't remember which year that was ! Here in France that celebration of ghosts , witches and other spooks of the winter night is about buried nowadays and costumed parties are rare . People just don't know how to have fun anymore on this matters ! I miss the pumkin pies too !

Where did control of the band's sound stop with the band and was left in the hands of the "techies" not phrased well I know, oktoberfest beer for breakfast, lol Strait forward I guess How much control over what they sounded like on any given nite was the result of the bands hand on the dials vs
the other influences.
