Coming off of a full tour of 1976 I'm getting deep into '72 but I just can't listen to EVERY show, I just can't. What are the BEST shows of the Europe tour? 4/8 has always been a favorite just for the "IT" factor but I like 4/14 and 5/26 also of course.

What are some of the highlights?

Max, I think you need to check out every note played during this tour, after all you listened to every show from (yawn) '76, and even the the weakest show (there were no weak shows) from Europe in 1972 completely blows away the best from way overrated 1976.

I'd pick 7/17/76 over 4/21/72 in a pinch.

I think there's a lot going on in '76, particularly July-October. It was the last year Keith was involved in the music & the last year for freewheeling jazzy improv segues between the songs.

I do like '76, particularly the long jazzy Slipknot!s and the extended intro jams on Eyes of the World. But I still feel the jamming on these shows doesnt really meet the expectations raised by the spectacular set lists. And though I personally prefer 7/16, I'll never agree that any of these shows can hold a candle to best from Europe in '72...

7/17/76 was one of my stand-outs from the summer along with 6/28 (and others of course but those two are BIG). I love 7/18 as well, it is polished and nice and great but 7/17 seems to have some extra "It" going around.

If by "overrated" you mean I listen to and "rated" each show for the year, then, yes, you'd be correct. But, if in fact, you mean that it doesn't deserve any attention because of the artistic creativity they explored on every night braving the cold winds of criticism and forging their own way into the dark, shining a light of optimism and sheer joy, then you, kind sir, would be wrong.

I tried not to bite on this one but I am not so strong when it comes to the red-headed step-child we call 1976.

No my friend, your efforts spent reviewing the entire year are quite commendable! By overrated I refer to the fact that the 1976 set lists look quite spectacular on paper, but in fact there really was not that much going on...

1976 might be my favorite year for the Dead... or '67. Same numbers, either way.

My favorite from that tour would be the Kongressaal show:

Featuring my favorite '72 Morning Dew... :D

I've been thinking of about this for quite a long time myself.
Surely the end of Pigpen's band was tragic for many at the time.... My opinion on tour highlights would be The Strand Lyceum run from 5/23-5/26 and the phrase "did ice cream ?", which became a household word soon after this amazing european tour.

Most were pretty great. Here are a couple of my favorites:

Paris: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1972-05-04.sbd.miller.77294.sbeok.flac16

Denmark: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1972-04-14.sbd.miller-repitched.76006.flac16

Amsterdam: http://www.archive.org/details/gd72-05-10.sbd.kaplan.1582.sbeok.shnf

and Luxembourg: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1972-05-16.sbd.unknown.7089.sbefail.shnf

Here is a really great article from 1972 about the Grateful Dead shows in Paris:

Some of the others' favorites are ones I don't revisit much - but some that do get repeated plays:

The German run at the end of April - 4/24 (released), 4/26 (partly released), 4/29 (aud or matrix), three killer shows in a row.
Set II at Bickershaw, 5/7, is quite special. As if the fifty-minute Dark Star>Other One wasn't enough, this was Pigpen's last circulating Lovelight, until the one from 5/24 turned up on the Rockin' the Rhein release.... We only have three 1972 Lovelights, but they are excellent.
And for Caution fans, 5/11 is a must - Pigpen's last Caution! (Also a good show for those who simply can't get enough Dark Star.)
And in the Strand run, the sbd portion of 5/24 is really nice, but 5/25 is amazing, especially now that Charlie Miller has given us the (almost) whole show.

Coming from '76, the nearly-identical setlists every night in '72 will be very apparent; but Pigpen's songs (and the unique Pigpen/Keith pairing) mix things up more than in later '72.

is the 5-07 show the only time they played dark star and the other one in one show in 72? i cant think of any others off hand. they usually picked one or the other to be their vehicle for the evening...

as for releases, the dark stars from 4-8 (steppin out) and 4-24 (rockin the rhein) are among the best ever performed hands down. those two releases are great.

as for non releases, i like 5-3 and 5-4 as well as 5-10 and 5-11. the dark star from 5-11 is epic, not just for its length but also for its content. there are some unique phil bird song teases throughout.

Echo Rockin the Rhine...and that if you're going to devote some time to listening to a stretch of music you sure couldn't go wrong with this run.

If you want to get deep in '72 don't forget July-December.
The spring tour seems to get the lion's share of attention, but the playing from 7/16 to 12/31 is remarkable. It's uniquely complex, nuanced; there's one drummer, Keith has settled in, Jerry's voice is youthful and energetic, on and on.
The music never sounded like it did before this period, or after.
