Some seasonal tunes for your consideration (or not).

Bela Fleck:

I am convinced either Bela Fleck is not mortal or he has 9 fingers and two opposable thumbs on each hand.

Bob Walkenhorst:

What else is out there?

Best Christmas song ever, and quite possibly best Irish-American song ever, too

Have to agree with you here, Fennario, about the best Christmas song. I'm not sure what happens in the US, but we have "festive" songs blared out everywhere in December (and October and November, too*). We have to put up with things like Jona Lewie's "Stop the Cavalry" and Greg Lake's pompous prog-rock rip-off of Lieutenant Kije. Even really fun songs like Slade's "Merry Christmas Everybody" and Wizzard's "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" have become tiresome nuisances over the years. Pogues too; it's now probably the best of a bad bunch in Britain. So to put them in perspective I'll compare them with what must be the most nauseating song ever: Cliff Richard's "Mistletoe and W(h)ine". It has the most contrived lyrics of all time - Christmas time, mistletoe and wine, Children singing christian rhymes (btw wasn't Christian Rimes the drummer for the Clash? :-)) - sung by a sanctimonious shirt-lifter... it's even worse than that drivel from Paul McCartney.

Must disagree on best Irish-American - what about the Dropkick Murphys?

* I know I criticise my town of Oldham as a one-horse town, but 6 miles up the road is Rochdale, which has this year proven itself to be a one-horse town where the horse has died. There's a Green Day line from Deadbeat Holiday: "Christmas lights in the middle of August". Well, Rochdale Council put up christmas lights in...you guessed it...August!! I kid you not, google it. How deadbeat is that?!

To finish on a positive note: great call by jglynn on Setzer. Top guitarist!

I'm not familiar enough with the Dropkick Murphys to say, but there is something special about the way this song sums up a particular immigrant experience - it's a unique cocktail of lust, substance abuse, resentment and affection that I have not seen expressed anywhere else.

Reminds me of me own childhood in the heavily Irish-American suburbs of Boston, and yes I am Irish-American myself, so I get to say whatever I want about the drunken louts. :>)

Agreed Pogues best Xmas song, but there's a place in my heart for Lennon's 'Happy Christmas (War is over)'. Without wishing to come over all Scrooge I loathe this time of year. I'm happy to spend a few days of winter holiday with friends and relatives, but have no time for the christian message or the desperate commerce that has attached to it.

Dylan - 'They sell everything from toy guns that spark to flesh-coloured Christs that glow in the dark. Its easy to see without looking too hard that not much is really sacred.'

(And then he became a christian FFS !!)
