The Archive needs your help. We would like to get more traffic to the cool offerings on the Live Music Archive. We would like to get more people to link to the band pages, and maybe even get search engines to give us free ad space to get more traffic, but...

the band pages are really boring.

This is not helped by our not-very-intuitive interface for adding stuff, and only admins can change the page, but within these constraints maybe we can still get some things done.

I like the images on this page since it has a logo in the upper corner (so every concert will have that logo), and a picture of the band): http://www.archive.org/details/SciFi

If there is a logo then it shows up on the list of bands-- and I bet it will cause more traffic from there:
http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=etree&field=%2Fmetadata%2Fcreator

Please help by dolling up your fav bands pages if you have admin privs, and if you dont, maybe you could post suggested pictures and text in the replies here, and those that do a bunch of them will get admin privs.

Anyway, please help get more traffic to these great bands concert recordings!

Thanks Brewster! Yes, we'd love to add your band's logo to its page. The standard image size for the collection header (which appears in the top-right of each concert, as well as the "browse all artists" page) is 160px wide by 70px tall.

At that size, it won't get squashed on the "browse all artists" page (which resizes all images to 160px wide) and it won't throw the top bar out of whack when it appears on an concert's page (like M. Bison's does: http://www.archive.org/details/M.Bison)

We can also put a band logo and bio on the band page itself, like the one that Brewster linked. That will only appear there, and we can actually place any HTML in there you want (within reason). The best use of HTML I've seen is on the Bleaulegs put out by Ryan Montbleau: http://www.archive.org/details/montbleau2006-12-30.Bleauleg.flac16

So...please do gussy up your pages if you want!

I just went to the "browse all bands" page and didn't like it. By all means, doll up the bands' individual pages with logos etc but it's not necessary on the big list. It took awhile to download because some images are HUGE. It's unnecessary, draws attention to some bands and makes others struggle to be seen ...
Not to mention how awful some of those graphics are!

So does it need to be exactly 160px wide by 70px tall? The bands that I have added pics for I did one or the other cus when I did both it wouldn't look right. I think for all the Seattle bands that I have taped I will try to get a band logo/image added for them.

So does it need to be exactly 160px wide by 70px tall?

No, it doesn't. But since that image appears in two places - the "browse all bands" page and the top nav bar of the band's collection - it needs to do two jobs at once, and should be appropriately sized and proportioned.

Any image SMALLER than 160px will be stretched to 160px wide on the "browse all bands" page. This will also cause the image to be stretched vertically. Compare, say, the image for "The Fall Risk". Looks good here: http://www.archive.org/details/TheFallRisk
Looks like crap here:
http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=etree&field=%2Fmetadata%2Fcreator

Any image LARGER than 160px will be shrunk down to 160px wide, and will be correspondingly smaller vertically. Compare Blue Turtle Seduction. Looks good here: http://www.archive.org/details/BlueTurtleSeduction
Looks tiny here:
http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=etree&field=%2Fmetadata%2Fcreator

So 160px is really the sweet spot for image width if you can swing it.

For image height, the default image of the Internet Archive (at top right) is 70px high. The LMA llama is 71px high. Anything much larger than that is going to cause the IA image to float up in the middle of nowhere. See here:
http://www.archive.org/details/HalfStep
http://www.archive.org/details/SmashingPumpkins
http://www.archive.org/details/JohnMayerMusic
etc.

So I typically ask for less than 100px high if possible.

And there you have it...my treatise on collection header image sizing. :)

The easiest way to get around this is to put images on a white 160x70 background. So for instance, the archive logo at the top of the page is 84x70, and would get blown up about 2x on the artist browse page to 160 wide. But if you have a squarish logo, you can preserve the size of it by putting it on a white background: logo on white background logo on blue background (to illustrate - this would look terrible if you did it for real)

Hey guys, I resemble that remark -- "the band pages are really boring." It's great that you can employ html coding. HTML page structuring, and rich presentation, are what webpages and browser software are all about. The Band 'detail' pages and The Show 'item' pages should take advantage of this. I use this and I really appreciate it. But, I need to go back and edit the items for shows I have archived here. My Descriptions and Notes should look more like those you've noted. Here's another example: NoiseCollector embeds his music video clip, hosted at YouTube, into The Notes section of his item on the Audio Archive. We can use the forums here to create decent HTML-coded webpages. This is a valuable asset. Note that this is virtually a FREE web hosting service for digital archivists and people like me. Thank You! I use this technique to create webpages about the artists, the bands, the venues, the tapes, the shows, etc. Anyone can do this. Copy the URLs and place links to them in the Notes section for the items you are managing. That's what I've been doing. My own website becomes the main portal for all my items at The Archive. I have a seperate webpage index for each band I taped. I created a very simple "Taper Catalog" on my website. However, it is very powerful when you use it. And it's very easy for me to manage and expand from there. This is because my index listing is linking to many dozens of items that I manage here on The Archive. These items are the archives for shows I taped, and the webpages that I designed and posted here on these forums. I am a strong advocate for using this mode. With this approach, you can seamlessly integrate everything at ONE location. As a result, I have all my archives of artists I taped listed in one place. Links to other webpages, or dot-com sites, or social networking sites get included here. This technique hugely enhances the value delivered to clients using search engines on the internet. Try Googling "Monte the Taper." Let me Google that for you. Here is my website.

Forum: etree Subject: Re: Please help doll up the Band Pages!

I've re-read my post above several times, while considering what Brewster is saying. I'm trying to re-wrap my head around what I've said. What is my thinking behind that? I have followed my own logic to its natural conclusion. I can actually dump my own website altogether now, and let The Archive host everything. I can rework the HTML coding from my website. This is necessary to get my webpages structured right. Then they will render correctly here, inside The Archive's "wrapper" or shell. I'm already good at doing this. So, in other words, imagine me placing each Band's HTML-coded web page from my website, into the Notes section for that Band's shows and items I manage here. As far as my "Taper's Catalog" is concerned, just click on my name in the keywords for that, and every item of mine is indexed -- all my tapes are listed. [ignore The Ark GD shows.] Compare my webpage tape list. I'm talking about trading off the costs and hassles of hosting my own website. Administration and hosting priveleges here at The Archive allow for people like me to conceivably consider this approach. Imagine if you have a private website like me. It does come with other benefits. But, say you want to dump it altogether. I think I can re-create just as good a website for FREE, right here. The other issue to consider is having to agree with the Terms of Use here. For digital archivists and the likes thereof, I don't see a problem with that. I'm looking for new projects and side work. This is not expensive or cost-prohibitive by any means. I have posted on GD forum about some of the costs involved with doing restoration, transfers, and remastering from old audio cassette tapes. I just transferred and remastered another old tape recording of mine. I put this show in Open Source Audio on Jan 2. This time I used some HTML-coding on my item. Compare Van's item on The Archive to Van's webpage on my website.

If I had admin privs, would I be able to stick one of these (lossless web player) badboys on the Blasphemous Creation

3 years ago, I organized the creation of the new item for the Arabesque band on the LMA. I arranged for band member Mark Diamond to give the rights to eTree. I am identified as the administrator for this process. This is stated in the rights field, at eTree's request. I put 2 shows in there. These are SBD recordings from clubs where I taped them in 1980. I did the transfers, and I remastered these tapes for archival at the LMA.

Except for the granting permissions part (rights given) by the band, I thought I was the admin for this collection. If I remember correctly, I supplied the URL info to The Archive for the photo on the details page. And I also seem to recall myself being the one who supplied the text details above the photo, listing the artists and instrumentation.

I'm looking at the Arabesque details page right now, and I don't see a way for me to edit this item. When I go to either show's item page, I have the "edit item" available, whenever I'm logged in - as it should be, since I created these 2 items.

What am I forgetting?

I was thinking about upgrading their details page, and upgrading the 2 items I put in their collection.

Hi Monte,

You have rights to make changes to any item you uploaded automatically, but to be able to modify a collection page an archive admin has to grant you those privileges manually.

I just did that, so the next time you log out and then log back in, you should see an "Edit item" link up near your name in the header (top right corner).

Cheers!

Thanks. I'm here to help. But that didn't work for me. I still do not have "edit item" available on the Arabesque details page. I have to figure out something for a logo that works, and create a usable image in the first place, anyway.

However, I've looked at the entire list of bands on the LMA listing. I see what you guys are talking about. I think I found something that works well for the Arabesque band. Now I can create the 160px wide image. And then I'll lay out an upgraded HTML presentation for the SBD items.

Hi,

Hmm. I did make the permissions change, so let's figure out what's up. Usually people either can't find the edit link (screenshot is attached with it circled) OR they didn't log out of the site, and then log back in (necessary for privs to take effect). Do either of those suggestions help?

Thanks,

Your attached pic is correct, but I don't get that on my end. Yesterday, I tried logging in and out numerous times -- over several hours. No good. I tried using Internet Exploder, Opera, and Firefox. In Firefox's case (my main browser), I even deleted my cookies, temps, history... everything. I just tried those 3 browser again... just now. No good. Some people misspell my name, and some people get first/last backwards.

Ah ha! It's a bug. You DO have permissions, but for some reason the Edit link isn't showing up. But you can still edit the collection by replacing /details/ in the collection page url with /edit/. So http://www.archive.org/edit/ArabesqueBand

Give it a try and let me know if you see any problems.

Your link is the direct path to the edit item page for this collection. Access should have been granted from the Details page. But nothing has changed. The IA host is still denying access to the MetaData Editor. The problem is still there. Thanks for trying. Here's my screen view, returned from IA host. And another quick question for you: How do I change my password?

Hi,

Yeah, I don't know what's going on with the permissions. Everything looks right on my end, so I'm a bit mystified. If we get it figured out, I'll definitely let you know!

I went ahead and put your logo up on the band page. The band browse page only updates once every 24 hours, so it'll be a little while before that shows up.

Thanks for all the help!
