The Archive needs your help. We would like to get more traffic to the cool offerings on the Live Music Archive. We would like to get more people to link to the band pages, and maybe even get search engines to give us free ad space to get more traffic, but...
the band pages are really boring.
This is not helped by our not-very-intuitive interface for adding stuff, and only admins can change the page, but within these constraints maybe we can still get some things done.
I like the images on this page since it has a logo in the upper corner (so every concert will have that logo), and a picture of the band): http://www.archive.org/details/SciFi
If there is a logo then it shows up on the list of bands-- and I bet it will cause more traffic from there:
http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=etree&field=%2Fmetadata%2Fcreator
Please help by dolling up your fav bands pages if you have admin privs, and if you dont, maybe you could post suggested pictures and text in the replies here, and those that do a bunch of them will get admin privs.
Anyway, please help get more traffic to these great bands concert recordings!

At that size, it won't get squashed on the "browse all artists" page (which resizes all images to 160px wide) and it won't throw the top bar out of whack when it appears on an concert's page (like M. Bison's does: http://www.archive.org/details/M.Bison)
We can also put a band logo and bio on the band page itself, like the one that Brewster linked. That will only appear there, and we can actually place any HTML in there you want (within reason). The best use of HTML I've seen is on the Bleaulegs put out by Ryan Montbleau: http://www.archive.org/details/montbleau2006-12-30.Bleauleg.flac16
So...please do gussy up your pages if you want!

No, it doesn't. But since that image appears in two places - the "browse all bands" page and the top nav bar of the band's collection - it needs to do two jobs at once, and should be appropriately sized and proportioned.
Any image SMALLER than 160px will be stretched to 160px wide on the "browse all bands" page. This will also cause the image to be stretched vertically. Compare, say, the image for "The Fall Risk". Looks good here: http://www.archive.org/details/TheFallRisk
Looks like crap here:
http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=etree&field=%2Fmetadata%2Fcreator
Any image LARGER than 160px will be shrunk down to 160px wide, and will be correspondingly smaller vertically. Compare Blue Turtle Seduction. Looks good here: http://www.archive.org/details/BlueTurtleSeduction
Looks tiny here:
http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=etree&field=%2Fmetadata%2Fcreator
So 160px is really the sweet spot for image width if you can swing it.
For image height, the default image of the Internet Archive (at top right) is 70px high. The LMA llama is 71px high. Anything much larger than that is going to cause the IA image to float up in the middle of nowhere. See here:
http://www.archive.org/details/HalfStep
http://www.archive.org/details/SmashingPumpkins
http://www.archive.org/details/JohnMayerMusic
etc.
So I typically ask for less than 100px high if possible.
And there you have it...my treatise on collection header image sizing. :)

Hey guys, I resemble that remark -- "the band pages are really boring." It's great that you can employ html coding. HTML page structuring, and rich presentation, are what webpages and browser software are all about. The Band 'detail' pages and The Show 'item' pages should take advantage of this. I use this and I really appreciate it. But, I need to go back and edit the items for shows I have archived here. My Descriptions and Notes should look more like those you've noted. Here's another example: NoiseCollector embeds his music video clip, hosted at YouTube, into The Notes section of his item on the Audio Archive. We can use the forums here to create decent HTML-coded webpages. This is a valuable asset. Note that this is virtually a FREE web hosting service for digital archivists and people like me. Thank You! I use this technique to create webpages about the artists, the bands, the venues, the tapes, the shows, etc. Anyone can do this. Copy the URLs and place links to them in the Notes section for the items you are managing. That's what I've been doing. My own website becomes the main portal for all my items at The Archive. I have a seperate webpage index for each band I taped. I created a very simple "Taper Catalog" on my website. However, it is very powerful when you use it. And it's very easy for me to manage and expand from there. This is because my index listing is linking to many dozens of items that I manage here on The Archive. These items are the archives for shows I taped, and the webpages that I designed and posted here on these forums. I am a strong advocate for using this mode. With this approach, you can seamlessly integrate everything at ONE location. As a result, I have all my archives of artists I taped listed in one place. Links to other webpages, or dot-com sites, or social networking sites get included here. This technique hugely enhances the value delivered to clients using search engines on the internet. Try Googling "Monte the Taper." Let me Google that for you. Here is my website. |

Except for the granting permissions part (rights given) by the band, I thought I was the admin for this collection. If I remember correctly, I supplied the URL info to The Archive for the photo on the details page. And I also seem to recall myself being the one who supplied the text details above the photo, listing the artists and instrumentation.
I'm looking at the Arabesque details page right now, and I don't see a way for me to edit this item. When I go to either show's item page, I have the "edit item" available, whenever I'm logged in - as it should be, since I created these 2 items.
What am I forgetting?
I was thinking about upgrading their details page, and upgrading the 2 items I put in their collection.

You have rights to make changes to any item you uploaded automatically, but to be able to modify a collection page an archive admin has to grant you those privileges manually.
I just did that, so the next time you log out and then log back in, you should see an "Edit item" link up near your name in the header (top right corner).
Cheers!

However, I've looked at the entire list of bands on the LMA listing. I see what you guys are talking about. I think I found something that works well for the Arabesque band. Now I can create the 160px wide image. And then I'll lay out an upgraded HTML presentation for the SBD items.

Hmm. I did make the permissions change, so let's figure out what's up. Usually people either can't find the edit link (screenshot is attached with it circled) OR they didn't log out of the site, and then log back in (necessary for privs to take effect). Do either of those suggestions help?
Thanks,

Your attached pic is correct, but I don't get that on my end. Yesterday, I tried logging in and out numerous times -- over several hours. No good. I tried using Internet Exploder, Opera, and Firefox. In Firefox's case (my main browser), I even deleted my cookies, temps, history... everything. I just tried those 3 browser again... just now. No good. Some people misspell my name, and some people get first/last backwards.

Yeah, I don't know what's going on with the permissions. Everything looks right on my end, so I'm a bit mystified. If we get it figured out, I'll definitely let you know!
I went ahead and put your logo up on the band page. The band browse page only updates once every 24 hours, so it'll be a little while before that shows up.
Thanks for all the help!
