I just uploaded waves, as was recomended. Do I need to do anything else to create mp3's or streamable m3u's?

i think you need to :

go to 'edit item' (under resources, lower left), then 'change the info', then 'item manager', then 'derive'.

The File Deriver Task needs to execute on your item for the derivatives to be rendered.

Your problem is 2-fold. As required, you did NOT include a item.TXT info file for your item, and you did NOT include a checksum file - an item.MD5 and / or an item.FFP. Depending on the checksum file naming conventions you use, The File Deriver may or may not render a second checksum file -- just fyi.

You need to Edit your item, upload these files, and launch the File Deriver Task.

I definitely missed something. I went ahead and tried to derive VBR MP3's and it now says they are vbr mp3's and shows the player, but the file size is the same wav size and the stream player's not working.

I just went along with the wizardy little guide and read everything thouroughly...didn't notice anything telling me i needed "item.TXT info file for your item, and you did NOT include a checksum file - an item.MD5 and / or an item.FFP"

What's my best option now? Start over and pay closer attention or fix this item?

Those audio files are your WAVs. They're your original files. You've managed to edit the meta-data in your item. You filled in the track name for each WAV. You see this result.

You need to bypass the Edit Info section, and move on to the Item Manager, as korgds10 said. Check your item out, upload the TXT and checksum files, and run the Derive Task. If it is too painful for TXT and checksum uploads, just check out your item, run Derive Task. It should take maybe 30 minutes.

Check your item back in when the Derive Task completes. Go to Edit Item. Fill in the blanks. You're done.

Go to Monte the Taper archives. Download and share all my old Tapes.

actually, if you're not changing your audio files or adding the Text or Checksum files, you don't need to Check Out your item. Check Out is only for adding or deleting files.

I'm beginning to think I should have mentioned that I'm using Linux and therefore the fancy Flash uploader is unaccessable to me. The steps you and korg are describing are similar to what I'm seeing but not exactly.

I'll keep trying. Thanks for the help. I'll check out your tapes fo sho

From the Internet Archive faq: How can I make changes to my item? I already knew you're a Linux client. I've assumed Internet Archive's Linux interface is fine and dandy. I don't see why The Item Manager rules would be any different for any OS clients out there. I have created and managed Audio Items here for 2 years. The File Deriver rules have changed. FTP is pseudo-grandfathered. It's all good. Option for you... a) this is a slight correction... b) prepare to e-mail your PWD to me. Make SURE you e-mail me using the same e-mail account you used for your item's IA account. c) Then I can log into your item and fix it. d) I can take phone calls later if necessary. e) I'll be playing outdoors for awhile, after I smoke another bowl.

Your Ogg Vorbis files derived. These play in my Firefox browser's audio player. The VBR M3U stream file actually streams your WAV files to me. I d/l this steam file, and the WAV stream played in WinAmp.

Somehow, the WAV files are listed as files under the VBR heading. The WAV files get listed in the embedded flash player that appear on the webpage for this item. But nothing plays in that flash player. None of your VBR info is correct, there are no MP3s. This was what you had before you derived the Ogg Vorbis.

fyi, If you try and do any file deriving from this point, you will crash and burn. You MUST DELETE all derivative files first, and then derive from scratch. Just leave your WAVs there intact. Then call up and execute The File Deriver Task for your item. I've done this before when I made some changes to my items.

I think I got it now, no? I'm not sure what I did wrong but it's streaming for me now and i can download the mp3's. I know the metadata is undone but for my first upload this is pretty much satisfactory for now

Let me know if you see something wrong...if not then thanks a lot for all your help and thanks for that killer Newgrass Revival show you have posted.

What is Ogg Vorbis?

Ogg Vorbis is a new audio compression format. It is roughly comparable to other formats used to store and play digital music, such as MP3, VQF, AAC, and other digital audio formats. It is different from these other formats because it is completely free, open, and unpatented.

So clearly, your VBR list doesn't hold up by this definitive measure. Your "VBRs" are HUGE. Not to mention, when I d/l your Audio files off the VBR list, shown in my Browser's screen capture image, I get filenames with WAV extensions. Time for another bowl, brother. You'll get it. It's not that hard.

Okay, your item must have been deriving during this conversation, evidently. Maybe the Indexer cached it earlier, before it finished deriving. I guess that's what was up earlier, shown in my browser. The Derive Task is completed correctly for your item. Also, it is Indexed correctly already, in the Master Index. You got it.

fyi, What kind of audio file should I submit? This faq's link will jump you to the Audio File Deriver's rendering scheme. Their matrix breaks it down. It's an ancient table and it is out of date.

On April 14, 2009, The Archive posted:

Yesterday we made live a large update to the way we create the audio and video displayed on our site. Most folks might not notice the changes, so here's a rundown:

[excerpt]

We are no longer making [deriving] 64kb MP3s (or zips or m3u playlists of those files). This was a judgement call -- given how poor the sound quality is for these files and the fact that most people are getting more and more bandwidth to their devices and computers.
