Walk Me Out in the Morning Dew--Bonnie Dobson
This is the premiere ballad sung by Jerry during the career of the Grateful Dead. This song turned into the show stopper and often ended a show on a climactic bang...I offer the following list as a reference tool--criteria include: technical mastery (precision), emotion, lyrical and vocal performance and the Jerry Factor, etc...

gotta agree with ya on the 09/18/87 - that has got to be the MOST emotional MD ever. Not that I have heard them all, but that version has brought tears to my eyes for years.... the last verse of "I guess it doesn'matter....." it absolutely stunning. 09-17-1982 was, indeed, remarkable. The raw vulnerable, yet powerful emotion in Jerry's singing is at once both martial and fragile in the way that only he could do. This quality is mirrored in the outro, which is unlike any other I have experienced. It may be the shortest one ever, but it is, nevertheless, perfect in every way. Jaw droppingly tender filigree with the whole band so in sync that the sudden upshift into magisterial heights is sudden, yet perfectly locked into place. Not the kind of pro forma blowout that had become so common in the 80s, but truly powerful because it was so completely right. A gem to be sure.

Hard to believe that one of the best was missed on this post- I guess we all cannot listen to every version of everything.
Have a listen to 2-15-69
Is is special in many many ways. It has the great "crunchy" sound Jerry had in those days- It has a phenomenal decresendo and crescendo from beginning to end. But what is especially good about this version is Jerry's vocal stylings that he used- trust me you want to listen to this one- I feel it is a top 5 vocal performance of this song by Jerry- not even including his or the band's playing- it is hard to explain.....but take a listen

Everybody loves that Cornell '77 but I think Passaic 4/27/77 is better. Anyone who has seen the video would have to agree.......it's the most excited I've ever seen Jerry.

Well Barton -is well - a mind melt for later stuff I always liked 4-14-84 at Hampton - Jerry blazed at this show - the Dew runs the gamut from sweet and tender tight into the march onto sonically raw at the end with Phil, Bobby and Brent on the B3 all in stride.

I love the '81 Dews, My all time favorite Dew is 9-11-81. the jam in the middle of the song was raging, and the final jam started out so ,sad and quiet and build to a fiery climax. Of all the Dews I saw over 18 years of Dead shows, this one stands out as the best for me.

My fav's would have to be the dew from the 6/2/70 show and from 5/8/77. 3/17/94 is good too. What's anybody's favorite El Paso?

I think you're maybe overlooking 10/12/84. I saw this one along with 4/1/84 and 6/18/83 and thought it may have been the best of the three.3/24/86 is worth a mention too, I love the "walk off" versions.To be honest though I was at 9/18/87 I totally forgot about it until I heard it here on the Archive.Remebered the La Bamba though.

yes, 10-12-1984 is a very good version, as is 03-24-1986, I could also throw in 12-30-1987 and 10-08-1989 as other incredible versions...

I have to agree that that Philly Dew is wonderful; perfect in every way. On the other hand, I have to admit that I was saddened the first time I heard a sound board recording of it. All of the internal bloom and most of the magic that I love about the high quality aud that I have was completely missing. Even Jerry's first note in the outro, maybe the most profound and perfect single note I have ever heard, is simply lost. I hope the the Dick's Picks soundboard does this show justice.
