Scarlet>Fire |
First Played 03-18-1977
Last Played 07-02-1995
This classic combination was a crowd favorite at Grateful dead shows for years. This serves as a review of the best Scarlet>Fires played. Criteria include: Technical merit, vocal and lyrical performance, energy and of course the intangibles that make the Dead the Dead...
The Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain
Hall of Fame (in no particular order)
1. 05-08-1977 (genius version)
2. 10-10-1980 (beautiful segue, Jerry fans Fire)
3. 03-22-1990 (Midi magic, amazing segue)
4. 07-08-1987 (short, but tight and jams)
5. 03-31-1988 (classicly constructed)
6. 05-08-1979 (need an upgrade pronto d)
7. 10-01-1994 (the band gets it together)
8. 12-31-1978 (New Year's energy high)
9. 06-18-1983 (great early 80s)
10. 10-19-1981 (searing Garcia jams in Fire)
11. 06-07-1991 (great Garcia-Hornsby interplay)
12. 12-28-1986 he's back!
honorable mention: 04-11-1978, 10-02-1977 (some of Garcia's best wah leads ever), 02-05-1978, 09-02-1978, 04-20-1984, 03-28-1985 (distortion effects city), 04-22-1979, 09-08-1983, 10-21-1983, 10-17-1978, 09-14-1990, 03-21-1991, 09-04-1991
special note--10-14-94--in my opinion , one of the most over-rated tracks in Dead history
11-01-1979--Good, but not truly great
11-30-1980--amazing segue into Fire, but Jerry's solos in Fire are lacking...
just my two cents...beep beep

5/13/77 is pretty neat. I love all of them that have a lot of the wah-wah petal going on. It really sounds like its talking to me, but I guess it's supposed too.

Re: Scarlet>Fire |
Which(or may I ask what year) scarlet fire is the one from hartford that Bobby was going wild with some strange sound. It had some sort of tawg sound to it, I was at that show, and had a cassette that I loaned to someone but never got back, If someone can help, I would appreciate it, it was in the eighties, thanx

Re: Scarlet>Fire |
oops. i see that 10-21-83 at least made your "honorable mentions". i like your list. ditto on 10-14-83. could any 90s scarlet-fire out-rank one of those long, smokey versions they played in '83? just wondering...

Re: Scarlet>Fire |
Our first show is often the fondest: 1.8.79 at MSG is epic, the end of Fire astonishing. I'll also ditto Fishead's recommend of 2.3.79 for the intensity of Scarlet.
And 2 from 1981: MSG 3.10 and Glens Falls on Cinco de Mayo (5.5), high energy time.

Re: Scarlet>Fire |
5/26/1995 Known as the"Last hoorah" for Dead shows. This show has a KILLER Scarlet/Fire for Jerry's condition. Granted, his vocal performance isn't 5 star. But the playing deserves every bit of 5 stars. Check this one out.

Re: Scarlet>Fire |
Need more? Of course!
9-11-(unfortunate month/day, granted) but the year is 1982.
I call this the most "perfect" S-F combo ever. Perfect tempo, perfect jams, perfect vocals, no screw-ups on the lyrics by Jerry' perfect redux back into the Scarlet finish.

Re: Scarlet>Fire |
I hate to add one more question to this thread but in all your searches for some great Scarlet/Fire has anyone come across the show that contains the Scarlet/Fire which is tagged on the end of disc 2 of Dick's Pick's 13? It's a very slow, funky one that sounds like 1979 0r 1980. could be a bit later, not sure. Defintely early in Brent's tenure. If anyone knows, I would really appreciate a head's up. And while I'm here, let me throw in my two cents-- some of my favortie (though I know I'm leaving out a few and probably covering some that have already been thrown out)
5-17-77,10-2-77, 11,30,79, 11-26-82, 3-31-84, 3-22-90, 04-03-90 (just Scarlet), and 06-07-91. 10-2 is maybe the hottest of this bunch. Always hard to say, I like different ones on different days!

Re: Scarlet>Fire |
Alright people listen up - I have been building a list for two years of great versions of dead songs and here are my picks: Obviously the 5-8-77 just smokes, after that listen to 2-3-78 - The first six minutes of Scarlet may have some of the best jamming I've ever heard! For a later entry one should try 3-22-87
I also LOVE to listen to a hot version of 'Eyes' - A must have is 8-6-74

Re: Scarlet>Fire |
San Francisco 12-27-83....A sleeper that not too many people have heard. It comes in at 30 minutes and the jamming is REALLY exciting. Brent has the "Christmas" keyboard sound going. This show is also noted by the version of "Black Peter" where Jerry comes to the quietest moment to sing "run and see"....Jerry hesitated as if to forget where he was.....and someone in the audience couldn't take it and yelled "RUN AND SEE!!"...the whole 8000 people there heard it and laughed. A great moment.

I also endorse 12/27/83, which I have turned folks onto for years. Other highlights from this run include the rowdy Stranger and the Other One (damn!) from 12/28/83, which is one of my favorites, start to finish.

YES!! this was a great Scarlet>Fire and show. This run were my first SF shows and they were really strong (TERRAPIN! and the 30th were the best of the run IMHO.)sbd of the 30th is crisp 27th has problems.Civic + the park was a nice New Years local.
