Grateful Dead: Terrapin Station |
Terrapin Station is one of Garcia and Hunter's most ambitious works. While Hunter performed all the movements live and on record, the Grateful Dead have given us a highly produced full version on the album "Terrapin Station" and have jammed out the "Lady With a Fan"/ Terrapin Station ever since. The song debuted on 02-26-1977 to open the show! (pretty ballsy by the Dead). The "Full" Terrapin was played once, on 03-18-1977, this version included the Alhambra ending. This tune never was dropped from the repetoire and was last played 06-30-1995 in Pittsburgh.
Best Versions
02-26-1977--The first one is pretty damn good for a debut.
03-18-1977--not the best 77 version, but definitely check it out for the Alhambra jam
05-07-1977--tight
06-07-1977--dreamy show
12-29-1977--Beautiful Encore
01-22-1978--despite a couple of Bobby clams, great version with a jammed out post jam
12-31-1978--classic
05-08-1980--great 80
09-17-1983--under the staryy sky
08-31-1985 opens second set, nice representative of the mid 80s
12-31-1987--orchestral
03-31-1988--well played
08-04-1989--hot 89'
03-15-1990--phil zone version
09-13-1993--very nice (also check 09-09-1993)
12-18-1994--last great version (teleprompters were on at this show ;P) Garcia rips some nice runs in the post-jam
other terrapin versions of note--
06-23-1993--kind of sloppy, but about mid way through, they lock on and the boys absolutely soar in the x zone in the post jam...
06-26-1994--over-rated, but worth a listen, I suppose...interesting post jam goes on for awhile, very jazzy...

Re: Terrapin Station |
I'm not much of a GD expert, but Terrapin Station is my favorite GD song ever. The first GD shows I heard were from 77, and this song is the highlight of any GD show. For me, at least :-)

Re: Grateful Dead: Terrapin Station |
12-28-79 and 12-31-81 are worthy of being on any list of top Terrapins.
They are also worthy of being on any top show list as well, but that is a topic for another day.

Re: Grateful Dead: Terrapin Station |
12-31-81 is noteworthy for some dusty nuggets and 4 sets. On the sbd the tape comes off as a mediocre performance, the aud reveals a juiced up crowd for certain...12-28-1979 is a classic 79' show...

Re: Terrapin Station |
For your consideration:
5.6.78 in Vermont featuring perfect vocals by Jerry and Donna Jean, 7.8.78 Red Rocks encore set, 12.6.89 Oakland Earthquake Benefit, crazy midi-jam of the Terrapin coda

Re: Terrapin Station |
Those certainly are great Terrapin's. Since 4/30/77 has recently surfaced, in SBD, I have really been enjoying the encore Terrapin. Also 4/27/77 preceding Dew.
